there are long scratches in my irish linen wrap on my schon.......but if i take a little spit and rub them, it turns the wrap and the scratch a darker color and pretty much makes the scratch disappear. Is there some kind of oil or treatment/chemical i could put on the wrap that would help get these scratches to lighten up or disappear? I dont want to damage the wrap further or make it unravel.

I've fixed a wrap that sounds similar to what you are describing. You need to have a cue repair guy spin it on a lathe and repress the linen. One of my buddies dropped a quarter down in his case and when he put his cue in and pulled it back out, the quarter scratched the wrap up. I dampened the wrap with water, pressed it out, then starched it and it was almost impossible to see the (former) scratches.

how do you do that.......press it out/etc......honestly i dont have a cue guy nearby that I trust...and I hate to ship my cue off somewhere....can you give me a how-to?

Maybe someone here knows a good repairman near you, if we knew where that was :) It is fairly easy to do, but also a lot that could go wrong. The wrap could be burned, or worse, the finish could be ruined. You could even get hurt, that makes people a bit leary of trying to desribe the process. Give us a chance, maybe someone here, knows of a good repairman near you. If that fails, re-ask your question in the "Ask the Cuemaker" section, someone may feel confident, that they can adequately desribe the process.

Pressing the wrap can be done a few ways, but they all involve spinning the cue on a lathe. There are several commercially-available pressing tools on the market, but I use the old standby: two oak boards. What you're essentially doing is pressing and burninshing the wrap, as was done when the wrap was originally applied. By applying water, the wrap will expand a bit, then it is pressed back down and burnished. This should take care of the surface scratches you are describing. After that, a quick application of spray starch and another quick pressing helps to seal the wrap a bit more and gives it that slight "tacky" feeling. Your best bet is to find a cue repair guy to do it as it would be next to impossible to do by hand.

You can try lightly sanding it with sandpaper. Mask off the butt sleeve and forearm, lightly hold 220, 320, or 400 against the wrap with one hand and with your other hand turn the cue. Sand in the direction of the wrap and work your way down. The grit of the paper will determine how smooth it feels. When you're done, you can polish it with the back side of the sandpaper, same way only firmer.

If that doesn't do it, worst case scenario is you will need a new wrap. Mail it to Proficient and for $35 it will be just like new and you'll have the cue back in about 9 days.

Is it important to keep the original wrap? If there's nothing unique about the wrap, a rewrap is at most $50 for linen. Depending on where you are, I've seen prices as low as $35. You could just play with it till it gets all dirty, then it would match. :)

thanks guys for all the info.........i sprayed some starch on a towel and wiped it on my cue a couple of treatments and it darkened my wrap just a tad and made the scratches disappear. thanks for all the input
