Depends where you live. Where in the house? I live in a Dry climate and near zero chance of moisture issues or Basement flooding. If not a basement, is noise an issue? Non carpet is noisier especially above other rooms or neighbours.
I like carpet. Cozy on the feet. However, if cost is an issue and you are remotely handy, then laminate flooring. Even the least expensive laminate on sale at the box stores is decent quality. An inexpensive area rug is an option in a basement. Again, get something inexpensive at a box or thrift store.
Its good you are thinking about this...now. An ounce of prevention Is needed as it can be a Major headache to try change anything about flooring after a table is installed.

If carpet, use the type that is called "commercial." It is woven, or whatever it's called, differently and will not show wear around the table, vs. wear around the whole room.
I've had mine for 20 years. The padding is finally collapsing, but it still looks really nice.

Shorter pile and tighter weave. Commercial type is the way to go.
I used commercial grade carpet in my basement thirteen years ago with a GC sitting on top. Works great. This past year I added a barbox in an adjoining area that has a laminate floor. Now I'm searching for a area rug big and neutral enough to work. In a home it's nice to have carpeting.
Commercial level loop carpet is tufted not woven.
The only difference between it and cut pile carpet is they leave the loops intact.
Cheaper commercial carpet is made from Olefin it's highly stain resistant but wears more then nylon.
Wool is very expensive and stain's easy. Not good for a pool room.
I would do carpet squares. Easy to replace if one gets damaged or stained.
