What do Sumo tips look like under the coating?

Some may remember my recent thread What type of tip is on my new shaft?, where we concluded it was most likely a Triangle tip. Well I received the Triangles I ordered today and these are most definitely not the tip that I had on my shaft. The Triangle tips are a brownish shade of gray where the one I had was a pale gray.

Bamacues, who sold me the shaft, said the original owner Scotty Townsend preferred Sumo or Sniper tips. Since there was no layers, I'm thinking it must have been a Sumo tip. I know they are bright red before installation, but have no idea what they look like beneath. I cut the tip height down a little and noticed that it was almost impossible to cut by hand. Are sumo tips a light gray color once shaped?.

Sumos come out of the box a bright orange/red color but that's only the outer preservative. They are a water bufalo hide tip that is dark brown when trimmed. Personally I think they are the best solid (non-layered) tip out there. They are a little on the hard side but grip well with a minimun of maintainance.

BTW, it sounds like you do probably have a Triangle or Elk Master if its a grey/blue color. That comes from the particular tanning process used on these tips.

just more hot air!

Thanks Sherm, I thought Sumo tips were boar hide, but obviously I was incorrect. Unfortunately this takes me even further away from figuring out what the tip was. It looked exactly like a Tiger Sniper, very light grey, but it had no layers. I assume the tip might have been boar hide.

Any ideas on a solid tip made of boar hide?.

Although our Snipers are blue/grey and sometimes we get the lamination perfect (no lines on the side), when shaping it is real hard to mistake it for a one piece. So, if you don't see circles on the top after sanding some chalk off, not a Sniper.

Sounds like its gotta be a Triangle (more grey, than blue). Or Elk Master (more blue, than grey).
