What do you think of my practice drills?

No disrespect intended and I think the skills required to do your drills are obviously very necessary.

But I don't like artificial targets. I think they actually do help the brain direct projectiles toward them...as in archery...pistol shooting.

I prefer to use diamonds of distance... friction spots on the cloth etc. because that's all you're going to get in a match.

The white binder reinforcers are fine to set the shots up exactly each time but I don't care for the paper or the circles. Having said that, I realize that such targets have been used by players/instructors forever.

I just prefer to use naturally occuring targets.

Jim

Suggestions

mattman,

I have few suggestions.
For drill 1 (shots): I would include banks, kicks, masse, and jump shots. For drill 2 (aiming): I would include angled shots (0 to 45 degress) because let's face it.....who gets straight shape on every shot? Angled shots should also be in the first drill.
For drill 3 (speed): Only ~ lag speed? How about placing the CB on the center spot and go 3 rails....stopping back at the center. This is also ~lag speed, but less distance traveled due to rail collisions. Also, shoot a corner pocket shot with the CB in the kitchen, and get the CB back in the kitchen.

Just my thoughts on improvements.

How about drills 4 and 5?
Can you use www.cuetable.com to display them?

These drills are very good! What is better is that you are making up your own drills and practicing.

I predict that you will get to be quite good at these shots and will notice this when similar shots come up in games.

When you get good at these drills, invent new drills, move on to new drills.

I have always made up drills and practiced what I am having trouble with. Then I get to where I am good at those shots. (Practice what you are not good at.)

One time after I had been practicing various shots for about a year, I was playing in a tournament and one of those shots came up. I easily made it. Then the shot after that was another I had been practicing. I made that too! Then the third shot was yet another shot I had been practicing. Well I made that as well. So 3 in a row came up that I had been practicing. I made them all and won the match. Piece of cake!

I would bet this will happen to you as well. So keep practicing. It is a good thing!
