what does it mean when someone is a 6 minus 1 in a tourney

I hear it all the time and was wondering what exactly does it mean when someone is a 6 minus 1 and so forth.

I hear it all the time and was wondering what exactly does it mean when someone is a 6 minus 1 and so forth.

It means that player has to win six games before their opponent wins whatever their handicap is (minus 1). Ie: if they're a 4, they have to win 3.
