What ever happened to "Pool Hall Prophets"?

I did a search on this forum, but could not find the thread where the movie "Pool Hall Prophets" starring Freddie Prince, Jr., was mentioned.

I had thought it was supposed to be released in 2005, and after Google-izing the movie, I read that the status as "post-production/complete" and the release date is "to be announced."

Brief description of "Pool Hall Prophets":

...an independent film written and directed by Keoni Waxman, is an urban thriller set in the elusive world of pool hall competition. Freddie stars in the film alongside veteran actor Ving Rhames ("Mission: Impossible I, II, III," "Pulp Fiction") and newcomer Roselyn Sanchez ("Rush Hour 2," "Chasing Papi") as Jezebel. This edgy film brings us into the world of Jericho Hudson (Prinze), a street kid with a gift for shooting pool. The film opens with the main character immediately being drawn into a dangerous hustle when he is played as a pawn in a contest of wits (and nine-ball) between two old nemeses: Cue Ball Carl Bridges (Rhames), Jericho's mentor and a legendary pool hustler, and Timothy Mortensen, a corrupt vice cop with a grudge and a secret past. With the help of his girlfriend Jezebel (Sanchez), Jericho puts his own bold hustle into motion revealing that he too is driven by unknown and vengeful motivations. This film chronicles the complicated personal journey of Jericho, from streetwise kid on the rise in the underground circuit to successful pool hustler caught in a dangerous game of deception.

Wondering if anybody has heard the latest word on this flick.

Along those lines, what happened to the documentary that was being filmed at DCC earlier this year?

The forum won't let me in without registering.

That is interesting, though, that it is going STRAIGHT to video and skipping the theaters. Wow!

Poolhall junkies never played in any theaters where I live, It also may have gone straight to video after a very, very short run.

It's sorta like you want to see it now, but hope it ain't too much of a stinker.

With the mediocre acting of Freddie Prinze, Jr, I don't expect Prophets to fall far from Junkies. Will Hollywood ever get it right or do we have to collaborate and outline a plot for them?

Btw, Poolhall Junkies is a movie for ballbangers. Love the scene where Ricky Schroder "spots" the guy a couple balls playing eight-ball. One, does any pool player not know this "hustle"? And two, eight-ball???

I know what you mean. My first though was Ricky Schroder was gonna start with a proposition shot out of this world or something. When he offers that spot it made me think of how much his opponent didn't know...like how good could his opponent really be? Not to good at all!

Plot thickens: Name change to "Shooting Gallery"

Well, after some more searching, I discovered that the movie "Pool Hall Prophets" changed the name to "Shooting Gallery." I'm not sure I like the way that sounds, reminding me of an opium den.

Then again, maybe the producers thought the name "Pool Hall Prophets" was too similar to "Pool Hall Junkies." ;)

Shooting Gallery? Two things come to mind: heroin addicts or Duck Hunt LOL

After reading this thread, i kinda had to chuckle, because last all this past winter, most of the young pool players i know thought "poolhall junkies" was just so GREAT!

And when i first rented this movie about 2 yrs ago, i thought it was pretty decent, even though it had the normal clique's and one liners that cheesy movies have.

But after watching the movie many many times, i realized that it was just a sad attempt at making pool COOL. I tried to tell all the young people who that the movie was SO COOL, that if you watch the movie and pay attention you will see many of the flaws in the movie.

Like how everyone shoots 100mph and just slams balls, and how everything seems to just line up no matter what. And what was up with Rick Schroders character using a graphite cue????

Also, i read about PoolHall Prophets several months ago, and it sounded like it was headed down the same road as PHJ's before it ever was to goto the theaters.

And yes Marissa, i thought it was funny how, the two characters in PHJ's couldnt figure out it was a hustle, giving someone 4balls off the table in 8ball. Untill thier other buddy came it to say something about it, and yet the Guy continues to play 100$ a rack in 8ball lol.

I mean its movies like this that make me Love the quality of Color of Money. I mean at this that movie had good actors, and a decent script. And believe-able pool shooting. Even though it was all staged.

Pool movies

JAM,

I think I'll just wait for Keith's book then hope that some has the vision to put that story on the silver screen. I bet he has a ton of stories. It would have to be a three DVD 6 hour movie.

Any ideas who they could cast as Keith?

Note: Hope they do something with the Kid Delicious movie also

Timberly, you dont pay the 57.99$ for the video, thats what places like blockbuster pay for them, to rent and then sell as a used DVD or VHS.

As much as i dont like PHJ's i did buy it on VHS for 4.99$ lol so over all, i dont think it was such a bad buy.

And i do love the ending where he con's Schroder's character outa his shot to win the bet.

But i wish someone would get a movie about pool done right, that way we can just sit back and be like damn that was good.

They are probably taking in to account the fact that it isn't going to sell!
Providing StormHotRod is right & the movie will be sold cheap like the rest of them...you know & I know that most of us will either buy or rent the darn thing simply because it's about pool. :D Good or bad, we'll watch it and then come on here & B!&ch about it. :p

If I watch it... okay, yeah, I will because it's about pool... it'll be a bootleg copy 'cause this movie won't even be worth the rental fees. Honestly, though, what Freddie Prinze movie is?

very true Marissa :)

i think the only movie i liked that Freddie Prinze Jr was in, was the first I know what you did last summer, movie.

All the others i had seen, it took alot to try to watch the movies, even though they was on HBO or Starz or Showtime.

and yes just cuz its about pool, everyone on AZ will probably watch the movie and then start threads about how bad the movie is, or about how shallow the script was or, the stupid oneliners, or how the Main character, was running racks with a 20$ cue lol.

I mean i think they need to make a movie about Pool players posting on AZbilliards, that would be a good waste of 2hrs of my life lol, i want a refund!!!!
