What Happened to Pool Rooms

Changing times? Computer and video game technology? If your really honest about it you know that real pool players never spend more than they have to and they are always looking to get FREE.....so its a good thing for pool to have alot of bangers, maybe not for your pool table condition though. No one wants to get serious about pool for money in my opinion becasue there is no serious money in it, people are wiser than before, maybe. One thing for sure is that the plethra of knowledge available and the internet sure has knocked alot of the profitability of gambling with pool, you can pretty much get a line on someone in a instant or soon enough, with a phone call or a look on the internet. In my area we have several players aspiring to get better, they are younger in low to mid twenties, but most have found out that the money in pool is very hard to come by. I believe the IPT was the best chance pool had for up and coming players unfortunatly it took a nose dive, maybe it will be ressurected? Pool needs something along those lines in order to appeal to the masses of young and old to invest their time in pool. Maybe we will go through another great depression like the 20 and 30's and the pool halls will again be filled with poor gamblers trying to rob each other and then the owners get to rob them all for the table time!

Instant gratification

Without going into the other 99 reasons for the change in demographics. I want to concentrate on just one. Instant gratification. We live in a world where everyone wants to have fun "RIGHT NOW". They want to be good at playing pool..."RIGHT NOW". They don't want to practice. They don't want to save money for a good cue..they want to run balls "RIGHT NOW" They want to have a fancy cue...you guessed it..."RIGHT NOW" The younger players that were raised to work hard for a living...to practice to become better at anything physical..to study to learn...are now in a minority. If a kid doesnt get a raise at a job in 2 mos...he leaves. The players of past generations took years and decades to hone their game and their hustle. The number of kids today that have physical and mental toughness, hand-eye coordination and the drive and desire to spend years learning pool...they are just too few. You cannot go back to the days of old. We must learn to stop trying to revive a horse and buggy past that will never come back. Just my rant for the night. *sigh*

Think you reply painted a picture of your 2008 well.

When I was a kid I could not wait for Saturday to come, as I was at the Boys Club playing Pool all day. As long as I won the game, I could stay on the table until I lost. When I lost I got back in line to play again.

Sounds like Carl's place in Depew, is that right Jim? If so, man, I remember the room the way it was. I'm in Erie, but originally a Rochester player, so I remember the good old days there. Lots of action! That area overlooking the tables was perfect!

I agree with you on kids these days. Too much instant gratification. The room I opened was for players...that was the intent. Mostly filled with kids looking to kill time, though. Closed the room a few months ago...same reasons as mentioned in this thread.

You are correct sir, that is the place. Sorry to hear about your room, it's a damn shame.
