I heard Cory tried to match up with John at the Reno Open............IN GOLF!!!!! Not pool..........But like player(Josh) said........come on down!
The What's Happened Myth
For some time I have wanted to speak to the wide spread myth that certain if any players dominate the sport of Pool , particularly Nine Ball. Today professional pool enjoys the moral equivalent of forty to sixty Tiger Woods, an no upper echelon player dominates Nine Ball tournaments in successive weeks or months. Many like Efren, Earl, Corey, Souquet,Hall Archer, Vickery . Parica, Immonen,Pagalayan,Bustamante,Daulton,Bernatchez capable of elevating their games in particular matches to dazzling heights of competence and excellence, and if one wins one time and another wins next, neither the win or the loss speaks to anything other than for that time period one of the group of many many many excellent players is demonstrating a professional competence under unspeakable pressure that only a few hundred people in the world truly comprehend or ever feel. If your interest in pool is directed or devoted to seeing or finding the best you already dont understand the level of play and competency and professionalism the exist in the sport. Nothing is wrong with any player who wins the USOPEN Nine Ball Championship, nothing, not now not ever, and truthfully anyone who feels qualified to comment , other than the other champions is indulging in ego fantasy that doesnt deserve response.

Give the poor kid a break! He's still young and even as good as he plays I'm sure he still has a lot of knowledge and mental toughness yet to be discovered. Add to that the growing number of world champs out there and it's hard for one man to dominate week after week in pool. When most of the top pros play you might as well flip a coin because on a given day one guy might get a roll here or there and that's the difference between winners and losers.

Very true SlimZ........but the offer still stands for Cory to come on down to Hidden Pockets for a little round robin. Straight Pool, One Pocket and 9 Ball. John will play Cory some sets of all 3.

The offer stands for him to come to Indiana too for a golf game but I doubt he'll take me up on it??? LOL 
John is no flash in the pan!! When he was still in Calif I had the pleasure, many times, of watching him play. He would come into HardTimes in Bellflower from the Victorville area. At that time everyone called him "Victorville John." He paid dearly, with no whining, to have Jack Cooney teach him One Pocket. He would disapear for a couple of days then show up with some of his own money and they would go at it again. He paid his dues with his own money and damn well learned the game. His attitude has always been top notch and he continously works on his game. Case in point, C. Joyner is in town and they decide to match up. John gets weight, (10-
They start late as John is still in the Sunday Tournament, which he wins. There are a lot easier places to win tournaments then Hard Times. Jon then proceeds to play like OP was the 1st game he ever learned. The 1st real major he played in he beat Mike Sigel at straight pool! If his attitude stays the same he will be at or near the top for a long, long time. He is a lot more than 15 minutes!!

Unlike most pool players who specialize in one game only , and can't play any other game John is a champion at all games. i.e. 90% of the pros play 9ball great but all other games " average ".

Okay, to clarify, everybody can agree that John Shmidt is a strong player. However, people on this site tend to have "a player of the moment" who (in their minds) can beat the world. To say that he is a more accomplished player than Corey is rediculous. Just look at the results for John Shmidt and Corey Deuel under the player finder for azbilliards:
Corey made $100,000+ in 2001 (including the U.S. Open and Reno open) and $70,000+ in 2002 (including a ton of tournament wins). On the other hand, John Schmidt still hasn't broken the $3000/ year mark in major tournaments.
In another post, pooltablemech has John Schmidt as the second rated one-pocket player in the world behind Efren. This also puts him ahead of Cliff Joyner and Shannon Daulton. Well, in case anybody cared to check, he finished 35th place in the Derby City One-pocket this year - pretty crappy for the "second best one-pocket player in the world". HA!
Although he may be the best player certain people have seen, this doesn't mean that he is the best player around. In my opinion, he couldn't hang with Joyner in one-pocket or Corey in 9-ball. In no way do I mean to criticize his game, but it is important to keep a realistic perspective on things. Otherwise, every time somebody won a major tournament, there would be a new "best player" and John Schmidt still has plenty of work cut out for him.
