What if..............................?

<---Dumb and Dumber
The I.P.T. is a success? I know, I know, it'll never happen, right? But what if it was, what if every professional pool player in the top 50 was a millionaire 10 years from now? There sure would be a lot of unhappy I.P.T. haters out there, huh! What would you have to BlTCH about then? Oh, I know, "ever since that damn I.P.T. thing started, I can't get a damn table without waiting in line for 2 hours." "Damn, every freakin' channel has pool pool pool, I'm sick of pool!" "I'm gonna try something new to hate, there's too many damn happy people in the pool world for me these days, I need misery in my life."
Oh well, it's just a "what if?" thing. We all know it'll never happen, right. It never worked before, how COULD it work this time? I'll just keep dreaming, maybe, just maybe, some day someone will come along and take pool to another level. Not in my life time, huh? Bummer:(

FLA is already home to the most anal, socially challenged recluse I know. You know who you are and, if you don't do the right thing before the HOPKINS show, some HOT threads will inundate cyber space! Icon, I hope your friend BLACKJACK, doesn't end up like the bow-wow I'm talking about.

It'll never happen, you loser. ;)

Hard to imagine isn't it? I remember all of the other tours that have come and gone without success. It makes us all skeptical of another big money sponsor who claims they are going to change pool forever but we have to have faith and give support to those who are trying.

This whole IPT deal is the most incredible thing that pool could ever wish for. Hell, I started playing 8 Ball, EIGHT BALL, just so I wouldn't be out of my own for those qualifyers. Hey Rude Dog, fess up. You've hit a few racks of 8 yourself just to see how tough it would be.

Only time will tell I suppose to see how this is all going to work out. Don't worry. If the tour is a success I'm sure you'll find something to btich about;)

Damn, I just had a thought... if the top pro players were all millionaires, what would the backers do? Can you imagine them approaching someone "play XXXX... I've got your action covered" and the player, checks his assets, and says "ahhhh, no thanks, I've got 50 dimes... I can cover my own". If poolplayers can make decent money, will backers go extinct??? :)

If you do the same thing the same way over and over, you get the same results. Seems like Kevin is trying to do the same thing a different way in hopes of getting a different result, ie, a successful pro tour. In business, they call it "thinking outside the box". It may or may not be successful, but you can't say he didn't try.

Nah, if they played on their own money that would be like gambling. From Buddy's book, "Handsome" Danny Jones said it best. He reported that he was having trouble going to sleep; he was having a recurring nightmare. "Its awful," Danny said. "I wake up scared to death, shaking, and in a cold sweat. I dream that I'm in a $10 ring game betting my own money."

The International Poker Tour is already a success......How would that have any effect on pool????

BTW...I found a FREE Schon cue for you...... It's not a two piece though...it's more like a 20 piece....All you need is a bottle of Elmers glue and a ladder....(to get the pieces that were thrown up on the roof) :D :D

And as well Dave, those who complain about the complainers would have nothing to bark about either ... a little grouchy this morning John ? ;)

Lots of things have to go right for the IPT to succeed. I hope it does. Here are a couple of possible scenarios post-success :

- yes, the backers would have no opportunity with the top IPTers, you see, as a famous star you can't just go out to the pool hall and gamble the night away, too many obligations and handlers that frown on their stars mingling with the public. It would be like Tiger playing and gambling with locals on a municipal course regularly.

- people will recognize the stars, and hound them for autographs, so they won't be too inclined to spend time in regular old pool halls anyway (see above) ... besides, with the income they should have, a first class private practice facility, either as a tour 'cooperative' or in their private residence is almost a given, whereas today many might have trouble paying table-time on some days.

- the IPT pros will stop playing most other events, starting with the smaller regioanl events ... why bother travelling to some hole-in-the-wall-hall for a chance at $5K or $10K when you can make $100Ks at a limited number of first class venue tournaments !

- the Rude Dog won't have so many targets for his basher bashing :D

Have a great holiday season John, all the best to you and your family, and I'm hoping that your son is making a fast and full recovery from his recent surgery (Christmas is a pretty good motivator for a kids recovery methinks).

If it is, and I will follow your hypothetical, it will be as much due to the people who asked questions and provided honest feedback and not just those who tell them what they want to hear, as it will be to the IPT themselves. This thing needs to be a quickly evolving animal for it to survive. Remember the $1000. original fee? That went pretty quick because they realized no one would go for it. You have to remember they actually thought of it in the first place so their plans are not always perfect just because they have money in back of them. They are going to make mistakes, a lot of them. The tournament dates have been changed, at one point they say because they didn't know they may conflict with the Super Bowl. Lets hope that was an excuse because if that is true then they really need help.

My honest opinion, I think they will survive in some form but it will look nothing like the current outline, probably on a much smaller scale. Their plan as it stands now seems to be pretty much just on paper. The one fallacy, if there is one, is that having the financial backing means success and it doesn't. Ask anyone who has been in a Broadway show that closed in a few performances. Having money and an idea does not make it happen. It is wonderful to dare great things, but better to succeed. They need to, at least at this point, structure this thing so success is a certainty and not an outrageous pipe dream that because it can't be done they fold it, that would be the real failure, to fold it before it even has a chance because their plan was to ambitious.

There is a interesting general inferiority among much of the public in that they think just because a person has money they must know what they are doing and who am I to criticize. The IPT if carefully done and allowed to grow slowly with the financial backing they have, success would be a certainty. Maybe not making pool players millionaires, at least not right away if ever, but it could build something that could be long lasting and really change the sport forever. As it is now it could collapse under it's own weight. If they do have to just scrap the whole deal, lets hope they don't have such large egos that they won't admit their mistakes and at least give it a second try in a more conservative manner.

This post is not bashing or criticizing the IPT in anyway, it is my most honest answer I can give.

I think there is a better chance than you think. Long before the I.P.T. I've been saying right here on this forum, (searched for posts but couldn't find them) that what pool needs is to publicly play the same game that the armatures play. 8-Ball, I think once you get it on TV enough times that the casual players start saying, "Hey! there playing the game I play!" things could really take off. A big key to it would be very good commentary. You will need a commentator good enough to explain decisions.

This is to Macguy because I don't know how to copy and paste more than 1 quote. Your answer was IMO very honest, as you stated, and that's what a lot of us like to hear that are pulling for the I.P.T. to work. I'll probably never have a chance to play on their tour for several reasons with the lack of funds to do so being at the top. But for those that do have this chance, whether they're a top player or not, it has to be exciting. Voicing an opinion about why you(not you in particular) feel this won't work out is one thing, but when people state their opinion as a fact and it's all about K.T.'s past and his book, then that's purely closed-mindedness, IMO. Nobody knows what's going to come of this whole thing, we ALL have to wait and see. The people that WANT this to fail, Why? Why would you want this to be a scam? A pyramid scheme? I guess I just don't get it and all of the explanations in the world still won't help me. If it fails, then, and only then, I'll learn why it didn't. But right now, I want it to succeed, for the players, the fans, this forum, and me. If that's being a dreamer, then I guess I'm a dreamer, but to me, it's better than the alternative. All I can do is tell everyone I know about this tour and keep them updated on what's going on. That's my contribution because I have nothing else to offer, for now. That's all I have to say, peace, John.

If you can ever get your ass out of Kingman where you'll have a chance of getting your game back to where it was you'll probably have a real good chance to play. ;) I'm hoping that, as time goes on, the qualification process won't be so expensive so that people will actually be able to play their way in. Not to mention, if you get your game back to where it was I'm sure you'll have NO problem getting some financial help if that is what it takes to get on the tour.

My job won't let me leave here. Wait a minute, I don't have a job. Hmmm, I was gonna quit but now I don't have to. Well how the hell am I gonna get outta here w/o a job that I don't have to quit from to leave? See Jimmy, too many decisions for me. Oh, BTW, my game is better than what it was, at least the 7 ball better. I haven't missed a ball in 10 days. In the past, I never went 10 days w/o missing a ball, maybe 3 or 4, but never 10. :D
