What is the average Break speed amongst the top breakers?

I thought I had read or maybe heard that back in the early 90's, Bustamante was clocked at or near 40 Mph. I still don't know how he's able to rear back and pull that cue completely out of his bridge hand, and still go thru and hit the balls squarely. Oh wait, he's a pro. I know if I did that I'd probably break a finger!!

That was kilometers per hour not MPH

I was breaking at my pool hall today and when I smash the rack, a few of the older guys turned their head to look at me and one of them said to another guy, "that kid sure can smack that CB into that rack." I took that as a compliment even though I didn't pocket anything. I tried a few new things today that some of you have suggested, and it definately helped me break. I actually pocketed the 8-ball once on the break at the lower right corner pocket. Smashed the rack from second diamond close to the rail. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

The most powerful breaks I remember were David Howard, Danny Medina, George Breedlove and Wade Crane. There were no radar guns back then. I suspect they were all capable of breaking over 30 mph.

Then of course there is the mighty Mo Fo Yung. He is in a separate category for good reason. No one is even close to his speed on the break shot. He once broke the balls so hard that a cop who was outside using a radar gun came inside to see what was making his radar gun top 60 in a school zone. We directed him back to Mo and he proceeded to put the gun on him. 62, 64 and a final 66 and he got a ticket! The cop told him to slow it down since there were children playing in the area. He was afraid they would get hit by flying debris. MO FO YUNG LIVES!!!

Don't forget about Tommy Brown's ear shattering break, you could not mistaken that sound for anyone else.

He is right, it would be KPH not MPH. No one breaks them 40 MPH. 25 and above is a high break speed.

I dont remember the exact numbers, but if anyone is getting close to 30 thats #@$ hard!

Hopefully Willie will chime in on this thread, we were in Indy with Jeanette during a teaching session and George and Mark Wilson were there. George was hitting some breaks and if I remember correctly he was getting around 28 MPH. His last break registered around 36 and we we all amazed. It wasnt until some time later that I learned Mark had switched the gun over to KPH to fool us all.

Willie do you remember the numbers?

PS. 15 mph is hard enough to get a good spread from a tight rack and a square hit. I would really consider 20MPH and over to be above average.

You're all probably correct. 40 Mph altough impressive, I'm not sure how you would be able to control whitey!! I must have just assumed it was MPH, maybe I saw the article in Canada, and forgot which system they used! lol
