What is the best tool tip you can buy, that is relatively inexpensive?

I need to buy a tool tip, but there are soooo many out there and I have no clue what in the world to get. My intructor recommended the "Ultimate Tool Tip," which runs for ~$15.00. You guys have experience so.... which one should I get that is not too expensive.

williards, sandpaper shaper or piece of pvc and some sandpaper. There is a chart in one of the threads that gives you size of pvc for diameter you want. Personally wouldn't get a ultimate tip tool, burnisher on the thing has done more damage to ferrules than just about anything else.

Agree with everything you quoted. The Willards is the best tool and I will generally burnish the sides with spit and some brown paper (paper bags from grocery store).

All the member will need to know is which radius he needs...
Willards come in nickle or dime radius.

Willard's is a good tip shaper, but there are two major problems if this is to be your only tip tool. The first and most important, IMHO, is that Willard's is just a shaper, not a tapper or tip-pick. If you use this to dress your tip and make it easier to hold the chalk, you will certainly find yourself spending more money on tips than you saved on the tip tool. The other is that Willard's shapers come in nickel or dime shapes, not in both. Thus, if you change preferences you will have to buy another shaper.

In light of the above considerations, I would suggest that you either buy another tip tool that accomodates both shapes and has a tapper (or pick), or, if you are set on either the nickel and dime shape, buy a Willard's but also buy a tip tapper or tip pick. It is essential to have a tool that dresses your tip without taking off leather. If you play on a regular basis, this is the only way to prevent frequent tip changes.
 
for an inexpensive tool i would recomend two things:
1. Go to a LOCALLY-OWNED store, they will be able to give huge discounts to keep your business.
2. For the inexpensive tool i recommend a "CUE CUBE", it has a shaper and scuffer (one is nickle radius and the other is a dime radius) and comes on a keychain, I got mine for $5 at a local store.

I buy mine locally too, only order things online I can't find elsewhere or order easily. OP asked about online which is why I gave out links.

The Sandman tip shaper is better than that Williards tip shaper. It won't ever were out and has a lifetime warranty. It cost between 12-20 dollars. I have had mine 6 years. I don't use a tip pick because I use sniper layered tips, and from what I have been told you don't want to use a tip pick on layered tips. You can get it at Seyberts and Pool Dawg.

So this is the only tip tool that I need!!!

Thanks everyone for you posts. I dont really know what my tip is, dime or nickel, (13mm). What kind of tip tool would I need if I bought a 12.50mm shaft McDermott cue?

Cheap?

You want a cheap tip shaper? Make your own. Buy six inches pvc cut in half with the diameter you like and glue in some sandpaper with the grit you like. viola.
