What is this material

Can anybody tell me what this material is on the buttcap? When cutting it on a lathe it makes a fine powder almost like it is stone. definetly man made material.
It came from the late Art Cantando's shop.

If it has a linen weave in it I would guess it is Ivorine 3.

Ivorylike also turns into powder when machining, but the material itself has a smoother texture, than the buttcap in the picture.
I only have ferrule rods, so I`m not sure if the joint and buttcap rods are equally smooth.

Linen/cotton holding some kind of phenolic resin or thermoplast, even some Fibreglass. Forgot the name, is rather old.
