I hear people throwing the word "PLAYER" around all the time. What do you define a "PLAYER" as.

IMO:
A Pool Player is not someone who just plays pool. They are a student of the game. They know about the games players and follow it. They shoot more then 2 times a week whether it be competition or earnest practice to get better.
Just because you go out to league once a week and smack balls around doesnt mean you are a pool player.
(Ive had this argument with a local player here.)

Player
Although the term is overused and loosely used nowdays, you have
Bangers (Don't have a clue about patterns, english, etc.)
Ones just wanting to have fun - For entertainment purposes only (dates)
Shooters (where the majority of people fall, usually a 2-6 handicap)
Baby player (usually a 7 that plays well, gambles some, usually not for more than $100 set)
Players (Someone that plays well, takes the game serious, plays more than just 1 type of game, gambles, plays tournaments well, usually 8 and above in handicap (A player and above)). This is a pretty big range in itself, as the lower part might gamble up to $200 a set, the upper part to 5 figures a set.
Back in the old days, you could be good, and if you didn't gamble, you still were not considered a 'Player'. Players were usually about money. Road Players were ones that took their gambling on the road to try to up their bankroll. Where a 'Shotter' graduated to being a 'Player', it was considered an honor in the Pool world, meant that you had some game.
World Class - A pro level, can compete with anyone for any amount of money.

Where I come from the term "player" is reserved for people who have reached a high level of skill at there chosen game. I never felt a player had to play all games to be a great "player".
Theres nothing more pleasing to hear than someone you respect, or look up to, refer to you as a "player". It's like you become part of the club!

I have always used the term 'player' towards those that are capable of taking advantage of all your mistakes and do just that....your in with a 'player'.
