i'm getting a new stick.with this stick i'm getting a dufferin sneaky pete.

i was going to turn my old mali into my break stick, but was told not to and that the dufferin would be a better choice for a break stick?

don't wanna sound stupid but is this true and if so why?what makes a break cue a break cue?

I'd say practice breaking with both and see which feels/performs best for you. It is probable that your friend's reasoning was that since the dufferin has a conical taper, which tends to be stiffer, that it would be better for breaking.

A hard tip for one...if you put a phenolic tip on any cue it will break a little better.

A fairly stiff shaft helps, perhaps a slightly larger diameter, or more of a concial taper like the other responder suggested.

Maybe people have a break cue a little lighter than their playing cue. The concept is like swinging a lighter bat in baseball, you can generate more stick speed, hence more power.

How sneaky is the dufferin sneaky pete? Most cuemakers feel you need joint collars on a cue you will be breaking with. Without collars, the wood might split if you are breaking hard.

it has a wood to wood joint.

The Dufferin sneaky is a good break cue, however I feel that you would be even better served by getting a Dufferin house cue that you like breaking with and bring it to a cuemaker to have a joint installed with phenolic collors. The duffrin joint is reversed and that makes it hard to get extra shafts. 5/16-14 piloted would be a good overall choice. 3/8-10 would be good in steel if more weight is desired, or you could get a G-10 pin to keep the weight the same. You also have the option of adding a jump joint.

The super pro tip is an excellent choice for this application, especially if you still want to be able to use the cue to play with, or let you friends play with it when you are out. Good luck.

Unless you break wrong, e.g. by leaning on the cue on the follow through (pushing the cue into the cloth), you won't risk splitting at the joint. If you do, a joint collar will certainly help. No matter who you are, you cannot split a joint just by breaking hard. Cues are made to absorb impact head-on and not laterally. If you just break hard, you would be more likely to crack a ferrule (I've done it :)).

What Makes A Break Cue A Break Cue?

The break shot is the most important shot of the game. You need to make at least one ball on the break and open up the balls so that you can get out. If you fail to make at least one ball or open up the table you are immediately at a disadvantabe because you are going to have to relinquish your time at the table. Remember, if your oponnent is not shooting he cannot win. conversely, if you are not shooting you cannot win.

In golf when a player needs to shoot close to the hole he uses a putter. When he has a long shot he uses a driver. Using this analogy it stands to reason that specialty weapons in pool definitely have their place. Winners in all sports have the best equipment they can afford.

The break cue should posses the following characteristics and all of these items don't come cheap:

TerminatorShaftT3™ (Break Taper) for more power
Short ferrule to reduce bend
Special hard leather tip for more cue ball control (Phenolic Tips are hard but they do not break any better than hard leather. It is impossible to control the cue ball with a phenolic tip).
Radial Pin for the best joint connection and support
Wood seasoned more than 5 years
Double Black Linen Based Fiber Collars and Butt Cap
The best ferrule known to man
Best of All – Your Terminator Break Cue is Made In the U.S.A. By a Cuemaker who takes no short cuts.

You get what you pay for and house cues and Dufferins don't come close to being the best - that is why they are so cheap.

Just my opinion - Arnot

I have to respectfully disagree with you saying that it's impossible to control the cueball with a phenolic tip. I have a phenolic tip on my Gilbert J/B (Ivor-X ferrules) and I can shoot a table length draw shot with this tip. I don't have any problems what-so-ever controlling the cueball.

oh sir i've been to your website and you sure do make beautiful cues and i've heard good things about your terminator shaft but i can't afford them right now.
for now i'll have to settle for a production cue and the dufferin.

Break Cue features

The features of a good break stick are easily listed, simply acquired and do not have to be expensive. At Mystick cues a break stick costs $150 and has the following features:

60" length for more stroke

Half length ferrules. We use Agis II or, if Agis is on holiday, LBM. Water buffalo tips.

Our shaft taper is a modified 3 cusion billiard taper. 13.25 mm tip diameter.

Joint pin is 3/8-10 with wood to wood joint and phenolic ring.

Our recommended handle size is thinner than thin, 1.200 to 1.220.

Recommended weight is 1 to 2 onces lighter than your playing weight.

Other cue makers have their own thoughts. These are ours. You are welcome to inquire why...jack

By the bye, there are plenty of Mystick cue break cue users out there, at least in Texas, ask them how they like it.
