I own (5) different sets of Aramith pool balls.

Today I decided to weigh the balls in (3) of the sets. I used a new digital scale that I know is very accurate.

The results were as follows:
Aramith Tournament (Brand New set) - average ball weight - (5.96 oz)
Aramith Camoflauge - average ball weight - (5.72 oz)
Aramith Stone Collection - average ball weight - (5.86)

I was under the impression that Aramith pool balls should weigh a consistent (6 oz) each.

The balls in my new "Tournament Set" ranged from (5.89 - 5.99) oz.
Also the cue balls in the "Tournament" set and the "Stone Collection" set were the lightest balls in the boxes. In the "Camoflauge" set the cue ball was the heaviest ball ball in the box.

Contrastingly, I also own a set of "Elephant Lunar Rocks" Collector's Addition" pool balls (a gift). The weight of the balls in this set was spot on the money. All of the balls in the set weighed between (6 oz.) and (6.02 oz.) each. The cue ball weighed (5.89 oz).

Have I been misinformed as to what the correct weight of Aramith pool balls should be?

I would appreciate your comments and advice.

From what I know, no manufacturing process will be able to create a set of anything that weighs exactly the same. There are always variations, and depending upon the accepted tolerances defined for the product the manufacture could choose to not use the product if it does not meet them.

With different versions of aramith pool balls there are different tolerances with the tournement balls having some of the highest tolerances. Does this mean that every ball in the set is exactly the same weight.....no. It just means that they should be the closest with minimal variation.

p.s from wikipedia According to WPA/BCA equipment specifications, the weight may be from 5.5 to 6 oz. (156–170 g) with a diameter of 2.25 in. (57.15 mm), plus or minus 0.005 in. (0.127 mm)

Great Answer

Tony,

Is the cue ball suppose to be lighter in weight than the other balls in the set?

Thanks for the very informative answer concerning the weight of pool ball sets.

If brand new, no.

If used yes. (it can and does get lighter with use)

Edit: You also have to be careful who you purchase pool ball sets from. I have heard of folks on ebay selling these sets who do things like replace the cueball in a set with a cheaper one, so they can sell it on it's own.
