What Size to Cut wood for Butt Blanks?

Hello,

A friend has access to some aged/weathered purpleheart and asked me what size to cut the planks down to begin turning it down for a butt. 1 1/2"x1 1/2"; 2"x2"; etc. square and what is the prefered length? I told him I would ask the experts.

1 3/8" to 1 1/2 by 18".
Forearms are usually 12" to 13" long. Longer if you want to use the bottom of the forearm as tenon and thread ( 14.75 to 15 ).
Buttsleeves are usually 3.25 to 4 long.
Getting 18 gives a little leeway in offsetting it when turning round if it has some runout.
If you core it, 15-16" long would be enough.
