Hey all, new to the board but my love for the game of pool is tried and true. I've finally decided to get me a table for the house and was hoping some of you might lend your advice on some of the better tables to get.

I might note that I have a preference for the look of the competition style tables. The decorative tables are a little too "foo foo" for my tastes. Also, the budget is pretty tight (around $2k or so).

Some of the tables that have sparked interest are the the following:

- Olhausen Pro Champion
- Olio Deluxe (unsure if that is the correct name or not, but here is a link: http://www.billazzo.com/index.html?billiardtables_and_more.htm)
- Brunswick Gold Crown IV (black table)
- AMF Savannah, Oxford & Vegas Playmaster
- Kasson Vermillion & Terminator

Again, these are just tables that I liked the looks of (basically black competition tables) and even though I love to play I haven't really gotten into all the technical differences that each table has to offer. And oh yeah, I live in the midwest region of the USA, if that makes any difference on availability of tables.

Your help, advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

No question in my book.......Gold Crown 4 ....Black.....with the gold trim. Just me opinion.....lol. I don't wanna hear King bashing me....lol! Jus jokin my pal Carem!

Hey Dont listen to that PTM guy, He has only been installing tables for 15 years or so. Listen to a guy like me who takes second hand info. about tables and run with it.
( I hope you can sense my humor there PTM!)
I actually like black tables with chrome trim better :)

I really like commercial or competition styles tables too. The best way to acquire one is call all the Billiards dealers in the area and ask about the used tables they have. If you go to any shops, give the owners your contact info and let them know you are a buyer if the right table comes through thier door. Patience will pay off. I looked around for the table I wanted for 6 months before I bought. Also Pay close attention to various classifieds in your area. Check out the local billiard magazines and the like.

Call my Buddy Jeff Black who runs http://www.used-pooltable.com
On his site there is a national network of consigned and used tables for sale. He knows people all over the country. PTM, you should hook up with him too for possible Florida area referrals, he gets alot of business inquires.

Most importantly...Hook up with a good local installer who will set it up for you. If you dont know one go to your favorite hall and ask around about who does their tables. Even a middle-of-the-road table can play really well if installed correctly. Figure his costs into your budget. If you say where you live somone on this forum is bound to know someone good in your area. If you dont pay for good installation for your table, it wont play near it's potential.

Good luck and post a pic of your table once you get it.

Well if your interested pm me with your email addy I will send you some info on the new tables the company I work for is importing from Asia. each table comes with 1 1/4 slate nice wood work great look for a great price

ask yourself this... what size Pool Table & what brand of manufacturer do I consistently play on? There's your answer..

But if you want a piece of furniture to bang balls on... get a Table that is a good investment.

I would only buy GC I, II or IV or the Gabriel or Diamond.
Now, if you can steal an Anniversary or Centennial somewhere, get it. Those tables are both pretty and commercial grade.
Olhausen Pro C has huuuuuge pockets. Terrible resale value too.
It's a well-built table but I have yet to see a pool hall with those tables.

KingCarom- thanks for the site! I'll have to check it out since I'm soon going to be in the market.

Gold Crown is (IMO) the best choice.

I'll be right over, once you get it in!

Thanks to all who are contributing to my cause. I feel like I am getting a lot of good and useable info. Some of the posts have spawned new questions/concerns.

Seems like most folks I talk to think very highly of the GC tables. In my eyes, this holds a lot of value especially when the guy installing and setting them up for a career feels this strongly. Mind to share why you feel so strongly about the GC’s?

I totally agree with you about getting a good installer to do the setup. I want my baby to be perfect and feel like a million bucks when playing on it. I live near Tulsa, OK so if someone can make a recommendation I sure would appreciate it! Also, if you can maybe share a ballpark value of what this costs.

I just checked out Jeffs site, here is an example of a sweet GC III for sale in Chicago area. Super poly black with chrome trim.

**DROOL** Now that is what I’m talking about!! No offense to PTM but I’ve never really cared for gold much (unless I was to get a few bars to spend…hehe). ;) The black and chrome just pops and looks awesome to me.

The downsides to this table revolves around the fact I am in the process of selling my current house, and will be starting construction of my new house in the next month or so (or possibly Spring, depending on weather). During this time I will be moving to a rent house and will have no real place to store a table w/o renting a climate controlled storage building. Kinda right now is my “homework” period to decide on what table I will be getting and doing my research to find the right price to buy it at.

And really an 8’ table would better fit my room. Actually the room will easily hold the 9’ table, but there are plans for an air hockey table (wife) and a foosball table (me) along with a sitting area to watch movies and games on the big screen. Once all those things get in there, my space for the table goes down. Hehe, but if I could talk the wife out of the air hockey table then I’d be good to go! Of course, she might rip my…well you know how it is.

Thirdly the table is located quite a ways from home, and when buying used I definitely want to do my own inspection on the table before committing to all that $$. Am I looking at this the wrong way? And would it be your recommendation to move the table yourself or have someone else do it? Either way, I’ll have to tear the table down to get it upstairs in the game room.

Lastly, the price is a little stiff at $3k. :( I was hoping to spend $2k +/- with setup and everything. Is my budget unrealistic to get a good quality table?

I would have to say that I mostly play on 8’ x 4’ tables, but every once in awhile I will sneak in a game on the bigger 9’ tables. Both go smooth, but since the majority of my game play is on 8’ tables I shoot better on them.

As far as brand, that is a little tough. Perhaps because I am only mediocore in my game level, I seem to shoot very well once I find my groove. If for some reason I am having an off night and can’t find the “groove” then regardless of the table type I won’t play to full potential. But most the time I find the groove and as long as tables are of equal quality the brand doesn’t bother me so much. How’s that for a vague answer? Hehe. ;)

I notice you listed all but the GC III. Why? And can you explain (or point me to a website that will explain) the differences between the generations of the GC tables. Obviously improvements were made as time progressed. Just curious what type of features each generation implemented/removed, especially in the III generation since you don’t recommend it. Also, do you have any sites to check out more info on the Gabriel and Diamond tables?

And thanks for your observations about the pocket sizes of the Olhausen table. I was unaware of that factor, and do desire a table that will make me improve my game (while not frustrating me to boredom). Plus even though I want good playability from a table I would like to have fairly decent re-sale value in the event of an emergency and I would need to liquidate my assets.

Again, many thanks to those that have contributed and future thanks to those that will. Everyone at this forum seems to be nice and helpful, unlike some of the other billiard forums I have visited. Kudos to those that visit here for the relaxation factor!

Take care,
NL

NL,
I've played on GC III, and I just don't like the way they play compared to the I and II. They seem like the rails are not quite as solid as the I and II. They make a "thuddy" sound. I hate the brass corners as opposed to aluminum (I) and metal (2).
The IV supposedly is built better than the III.
The I's might have been the best. Deeper slates to the pockets and solid frame.
I have the II. Adjustable legs and the slates are not quite as deep in the pockets. Plays great.
Since you are in the 3K or less budget, Gabriel and Diamond would be out.
I'd find a good used Brunswick commercial table or maybe an AMF or Gandy Big G.

This one's mine.
Don't ask how much I paid for it. You'll cry.:p

To the asia import guy..............What tables are you speaking of? Any info one them? Hope they aren't the AZBilliards tables..........lol. With their awhful slates.......that are suppose to be diamond honed. But for some reason where every you set a starret machine level, the level will rock back and forth.......lol. I have seen driveways leveler. And hey KING..........I started to get mad when I first read your post..........but realize you do have a sense of humor! No hard feelings.......just don't jump me for saying anything.....lol! ( KingCenturion )

No Limits...
since you are not that far from Dallas..you might try there for a good "OLD" Gold Crown...lotsa 8 footers down there.
At least on my last trip thru, saw quite a few...

Yeup....Dallas is real close (well 4-5 hours anyhow). Ideally I can find one from a dealer here locally, but if not then I wouldn't mind to cruise down to Dallas at all. Of course, for the right price and a good table I'd drive further.

I just want to get a good deal, and be happy with the decision so I don't regret it. When buying used, does anyone know if the lifetime warranties extend to each owner, or just the original owner?

Thanks,
NL

Hey nolimit.........check out the Gold Crown 4 we got for sale.........4,400 and exactly 1 year old. Under for sale threads. And comes with a matching light and centenial balls.

I'd love that GC IV, just the $4k price is too stiff for me, especially by the time I get it transported back to OK (assuming it is in FL) and get it setup. I'll be close to $5k or better.

I'd like to stay as close as $2k as possible, but judging from what I've seen I'll probably have to bump to $3k. That is really gonna be my top end, at least for the time being.

Sorry I havent got any info on those tables yet , been busy One of the guys in sales is throwing an info pack together for me and some digital pics as well should be soon ( fingers crossed) I am just a lowly design flunky so no one does things fast for me LOL

I saved a tremendous amount of money by emphasizing playability & ignoring aesthetics. I got an antique Brunswick Madison new cushions & rails, new cloth, a wood rack, Aramith balls, & a bridge installed for $700. Its ugly & unpopular, but plays great. My wife wants to strip it, oil it etc, but she will never get me away from it long enough.

Someone traded it toward a new pretty piece of Chinese junk aesthetically compatible with their remodeled basement.
