What to buy in Vegas?

For a CF, the OB Carbon is excellent and is cheaper than many of them. I like it at least as much as the Revo or Mezz Ignite and they cost $100+ more. If you can find one of those I recommend trying it out.

Out of curiosity, what area are you in? I have done quite a bit of travel for work and have yet to run into a pool room where players would not share what they know. Last week I was in Ohio and had a few people I met 10 minutes before hand me stuff to try out hehe

You may think I'm joking again, but my advice is to not worry about "all the specs" and instead focus on just hitting balls with available options until you find something you feel warrants a purchase. During my last trip to vegas I was dead set on buying a cue. I hit countless configurations and I even found a predator I was willing to own. Fortunately the seller wouldn't budge on price so I passed. No need to force anything, and the deals arent that great in Vegas, even if you manage to find some tiny discount.

You can literally chase a "right set up" for eternity without ever finding it. Humans are adaptive, and as long as you stick with something that "feels good" the rest will sort itself out.
I appreciate that. I am certainly not interested in getting anything unless I think it will be of use. I love my cue, but sometimes I'll pick up a house cue, and something about the tapered-ness of it just feels better, so if I could get something I really love, it would be great, but if the discounts aren't that great, then I won't bother.

A player in my room was dying from a terminal lung problem a few years ago and went to Vegas and got a call girl.
He said she was smoking hot and cost him $1500.
A couple years later he got a lung transplant and is as close to brand new today.
True story.
Did the hooker refund his money

....but if the discounts aren't that great, then I won't bother.
I can only speak to my own experiences but the vendors that had product I was interested in were within $5-10 of each other, and any real motovating discount was not happening. Flat out told them that it didn't make any sense for me to buy from them when a local vendor to my home was the same price and would support the product without drama.

Again, I passed on the Vegas pruchase and spent nearly x3 locally...lol. Maybe I should have bought the 'non-deal' instead.

Something less expensive but may be the best purchase...A GOOD TIP. Talk to the cue repair folks about tips and then get one PROFESSIONALLY installed. They may even tell about a great one and that it plays best if it is taken down to half size. Many pros do this. Personally I do not like the layered tips. Your friends in the league may not know some of the tricks of the trade that you could learn at the repair shop.

Hi all,

Heading to Vegas to play in the APA 9-Ball Worlds for my first time ever, woohoo! I know there are going to be a ton of vendors there and, even though I'm not exactly flush with expendable income at the moment, I know it's my chance to get the best pricing on whatever I may want.

Shaft Replacement: Do people buy just new shafts to go on their existing cues? I have a Viking Vikore High Performance cue that was around $280. It was a 20 or 21 weight, if I remember correctly (remember thinking it might have been too heavy after I had it for a few weeks, but now I love it). I don't need a whole new cue, but I'm wondering if I can benefit from a shaft upgrade. Is that even a thing, or am I stuck to a similar level shaft as the entire cue was? When I see all the high-deflection, low-deflection, carbon fiber, etc... can I save money by just getting the new shaft rather than the whole new cue or do they have to go together?

Thanks!

I don't think you will get a great deal out there. But what you can do is try different set ups and if you find something you do like then shop for it online and then use that as a bargaining tool. If it doesn't work then just buy it cheaper online. Sometimes you can wait towards the end of the tournament and the sellers might be a little more motivated to move merchandise but by waiting they may sell out of what you are wanting.

My Viking has a standard Maple shaft. Viking didn't have all the fancy stuff when I bought my first cue. But I have heard High Praise of the Vikore shaft. I would stick with it, and spend that extra money on lessons. Your game will be light years ahead of what any new equipment could do for you.

I don't know why everybody keeps putting down the Viking quick release. I've been using it for a long time.. since about 2001.. and I find it to be an excellent joint.
I like it, too, although it's proprietary, so a Viking shaft with the QR will only appeal to someone with a Viking butt. The threads could most likely be cut to full 5/16-18 to use with a more common pin. And my 314-3 fits 5/16-18, I believe they just drilled out a standard bushing to accommodate the pilot.

Aside from being sort of proprietary, I see no drawback. The pilot fits very nicely and also prevents cross threading.

Well have not been to Las Vegas since before 2007-2008, all I know is no deal, everything is pricy, from rooms, to meals, plus resort fees, and auto parking fee.

Cousin lives there we don't talk no more, no reason to go to the place. If Trade Shows, Pool thing were smart they would move to Dallas - Fort Worth Texas, that is more people friendly.

Plus you would draw more people from both coasts, and fly over country. Last you would not have to be effected by Unionized Work Force who over charged for everything.

Friend is sales representative for major Cigar company, they need banner hung above booth.

Four men, two scissor lifts and 20 minutes later ………banner was up, and FEE WAS 5,000.00 bucks.🤮
