What to do, what to do

Hopefully this actually gets some more comments that past times, but what ever.

So here is the situation, and I believe that it's kind of along the lines of that one situation at the CSI Invitational with Ralf

Let's say that you have a tournament/league "local stuff" in house for the most part where everyone pays X amount for the season. A player is unable to complete the season and thus everyone who was scheduled to play him gets a bye. The plan for the playoffs was to take the top 6 players and 2 wild cards (your number of wins would be how many entries your name gets in the drawing), as the season comes to a close and you tally up the field you are stuck on should this player who was unable to finish the season (played about half of the 16 or so week league) be entered into the drawing. And if said players name is pulled then his opponent in the playoffs gets a bye as this player is unable to continue/show for the match. OR enter his name "cause he's entitled to it, and if his name is pulled the it gets passed and another name gets pulled so that there is a filled "so to say" field.

what say you

I don't completely understand your situation, but I wouldn't enter his name.

I assume you're at the end of the season so it's too late now, but this should be stipulated at the start of the season: To be eligible for playoffs, a player must play at least X matches.

I don't know where X would be... more than half but less than all.

(FWIW, I probably wouldn't add the wild cards and just make it top 8 players.)

I think there may be a fairness issue here where the players that get a bye vs him are marked with a win for the rankings, unless I'm mis-understanding the post.

You're talking about the rest of the season ranking and play not just playoff brackets right?

You may want to re-do the drawings for matches if a person leaves, or maybe find someone to take his place and take over his wins/losses. I'm sure you can find someone to fill in.

Thanks for your input guys.

Feel free to ask a direct question and i'll answer it, but here is the details as best as i can

* Season start with say 18 players
* each player pays X for the season
* a few player drop out for personal and other reason
* because of the turn out it was decided to do top 6 plus 2 wild (so some get a 2nd chance)
* now that the season is at it's last week the scores are being calculated
* players that did not player the last guy that dropped out gets a win
* player that finishes first gets a bye to final 4
* the remaining 5 get selected and now comes it issue of the wild cards.
(plan: count each win as a raffle ticket and give a person that many entries "not a bad idea")
Question: should the player/s who dropped out get his name put in the hat? If yes, does it stand and the person in the playoffs get a bye? If yes and his name is pulled do you then pull another name since i guess the playoff is a bit different than the end of what's sometimes called "regular season" so that 2 physical players go into the playoffs making it an 8 "man" field?

did that help.

The player(s) who have dropped out have literally ended their involvement in the league. I don't see any reason to include them in the playoffs.

My personal opinion is that -- whenever possible -- playoffs should not have BYEs. Either keep their names out of the hat or if you draw their name draw a new one.

No they don't get a spot. I assume the whole point of the wild cards was to give a few guys who finished out of the top 6 another shot. Putting someones name in the "hat" that can't play defeats the whole purpose of having the wild card.

My view as well...

If you leave, you're gone. Simple as that.

100% agree.
Would you guys also agree that (just to be fair) having paid for the season only grants you a place in the "hat" but not to continue pass that point, because lets say that this person get's in, you then own that person the winnings for that spot if that spot paid. Had he forfeit after the drawing then there would be no issue, the opponent gets the bye and the player collects on their spot if applicable.

or as jaetee mentioned you give up everything. No one is expected to "hold" you winnings until we meet next, correct? IMO the spot get's recycled into the pot for the remaining players. IF you did not forfeit at the venue or can't make it on time for your match but will be there before the end of the event.

I always thought that paying up-front for the session just meant that the LO isn't constantly hunting down dues and it forces players to commit? Like... to avoid these situations. :) I would never assume that it entitled me (the player) to anything.

If a person has to forfeit the last couple matches because of work/life involvement but is showing up at the playoffs, then sure put their name in the hat. If they completely bail and won't be seen again for 3 months, just forget about them. By bailing out mid-season they are also forfeiting their involvement in post-season play.
