What type of cuemaker records are kept?

When I got involved with questions and issues involving
Schon cues, the Runde era, and such, I got to wondering
exactly what type of records does a cuemaker keep about
the cues he makes, either for posterity or future reference
down the line? Are they very detailed? sketchy? When
adjustments are made in the cue making process, are they
noted in record keeping like a new version of something would
be?

This is a good question and I would be interested in an answer also.
Detailed information could be a great help, when restoring an old cue, to original condition, especially in regards to the type of finish used. I would assume that types of finishes have probably changed more often than almost everything else in cue making.

From my experiences, most cuemakers keep little or no records. Records become paper trails. nuff said!

Then I usually make a quick scetch & pencil in the price.
I've been doing this since about 1990 & have several book filled. It sure makes things easy, when a repeat customer calls from say Germany. I whip out the old sheet & I've got every thing I need to make Thorsten's new Q.

I have also just started a book, with my repair customers names & the type of tip they have installed. That way when they come back for the next one or have a Q made, I can tell what they like...JER

I created an Exel docuent that I enter info into when I build a cue. I print a copy for the customer, (sometimes) and save one for myself.

It sounds like you two could/would be better served with a relational database. It offers easy searching on several different criteria as well as custom forms and things.

I to have a three ring binder with a page on everything I need to make a cue to a customers specs. It is 2 sided and has most of the topics pre printed so I just fill in the blanks. Every so often I clean it out but keep the papers in a file cabinet. I have the info from the first cue or shaft I made.
