What will tomorrow's pool cue be like?

I've done a little patent research recently, and there's lots of innovative ideas for pool cues, but few have actually been made use of. When you talk with the patent holders, they say things like, "Pool is a very traditional sport", or "It costs a lot of money to get something new in a pro player's hands".

There haven't really been any major changes in last few years...layered tips, phenolic jump/break tips, and LD shafts. That's about it. And even those weren't all that new. People were breaking with very thin, hard tips a long time ago. Sometimes even with just a capped ferrule. Lots of players were using short ferrules and thin shafts, which made their shafts LD. Bob Jewett used a thin, ferruleless shaft a very long time ago.

So...what do you think cues will be like in 20 years? 50 years?

I have an uncle that once constructed a cue from bamboo. Some countries don't have supply shops so he got creative. The US market is a lot different.

Some kids might do something with a cardboard poster tube, because billiard supply shops are tough to find. And when you get there all they have is junk.

They will have crappier wood.
I'm stockpiling good ones now.

They will probably have more gimicks.

I foresee something with hinges and springs, with a clear tube of glowing plasma in the forearm

There will be a chip in your cue that will send a trash talking message straight to your opponents ipod.

examples:

...it's like a nightmare isn't it?
...I haven't missed a shot in a week.
...you like my ass weights, don't you?
