I've done a little patent research recently, and there's lots of innovative ideas for pool cues, but few have actually been made use of. When you talk with the patent holders, they say things like, "Pool is a very traditional sport", or "It costs a lot of money to get something new in a pro player's hands".
There haven't really been any major changes in last few years...layered tips, phenolic jump/break tips, and LD shafts. That's about it. And even those weren't all that new. People were breaking with very thin, hard tips a long time ago. Sometimes even with just a capped ferrule. Lots of players were using short ferrules and thin shafts, which made their shafts LD. Bob Jewett used a thin, ferruleless shaft a very long time ago.
So...what do you think cues will be like in 20 years? 50 years?
