I often encounters this situation, but don't know how to make this shot. What do you guys suggest, try to pot it or play safe? I would like to know how you play this shot.

CueTable Help

Just a hair to the left of center and stun through leaving cueball at the bottom. 9-ball will open up angle off of second rail. Just concentrate on squeezing 9 to top cushion.

Anything else is to cute or to easy to just put you in even more trouble.

Solution

Another solution, and no I am not going to diagram it, is to bank for the cross corner, but aim on the long side if any, and if it goes long, it will 3 rail (the 3rd rail being just uptable from where 9 ball starts, and end up pretty close to where Nick's shot ends up. The only difference being that my shot is a 2 way shot, and Nick's is strictly a safety.

Personally, I never have that shot, because if I have a prior shot, I get out the first time, and the guys I play, you never get a 9 ball shot if they made the 8.

I like the position of the 9, but how can you stun the CB to the bottom of the table? I would aim a little higher to get this position, or am I wrong?

Good point to use a little left. If I did this shot, I would use a little right, but is too risky using a little right (haven't noticed it, till now).

The guys I play with, usually leave me a shot like this  . But where do you aim on the CB? If you want a 3 rail shot for the 9, you need to hit quite hard to get the 9-ball 3 rails. But you cant just stun the CB because it will not be safe.

shoot the nine ball straight in?

Simple high hit on the cue ball or a touch of inside. No shortage of rail to kiss the nine off of to roll it on down to the corner. That shot won't even catch the point but the point and the inside rail of the pocket can both be used to bounce the cue ball out of the pocket on considerably more marginal shots than this one. I make the nine ball and go home.
