What Would You Do 8-Ball Series: Shot #1

I like the idea of this thread but I just couldn't tell which ball the 8 ball was and if the other ball is the 6, I need to know for sure if it has space to go into the left side pocket.

Without that info, it's pointless guessing.

This would have been my choice, if I was considering a safety. Leaving only tough combinations for the stripes.

The problem is, you're also leaving easy safeties. From where the 9-ball is, neither the 6 nor the 7 are pocketable. If the 2 isn't pocketable either after you send it to the center of the table (very possible), John Schmidt will just have to tap the 9-ball to leave nothing and expect a wide-open shot very soon.

That's not to mention that getting a clean two-rail bank out of the corner pocket is a little tricky especially when you're bridging over a ball. You run the risk of catching the jaws of the pocket and having that 2-ball kiss back into the cue-ball. If the 2/9 were further away from the corner pocket, this sort of shot would be more doable.

Also my reasoning for taking the 7-2 bank shot for the out. There reallly is no way to play a good safe that will end in me getting BIH. So giving my opponent the chance to safe me is really not the way I would go. There are guys here that for sure don't mind getting in a safety battle.... but I'm the get out while you can type.

Although I respect what you're saying, I think it's important to note that against a good player, there's no safety "battle" to be had here. If you *try* to get into a safety battle, you're quickly going to find yourself on the short end of a safety beating.

Shots like these bring back bad memories.

I said "professional" because of who the shooter is but you're correct. The decision to not run-out here will likely cost you the game against most top amateurs.

Yep, it depends on your opponent.

I play mostly leagues and one of the rules of thumb is patience. It pays off BIG in league. That's why my advice to extend to another inning.

Against a top player, hiding him in a no-shot position is good, half-azz hiding is bad.

The picture is not very clear but if im not mistaken the 2 ball is not THAT close to the corner pocket so its not the easiest of shots to bank the 7 and break out the 2, also you gotta realize that if you miss the break out you have virtually lost the game (we are talking pro level here), I believe the right shot is banking the 2ball 2 rails towards the bottom left corner and leave it close to the pocket, the CB can easily be left stuck to the 9ball up table, for the opponent player there are no easy safes neither can he pocket a ball.

Since the OP is remaining agonizingly silent in witholding the goods, maybe you can share more. Did he go into the 7 straight or off the long rail? Is their video of this available?

Yes, straight into the 7

I think you can watch this on JCIN's youtube channel. I'm at work or I would post a link.

nice, the 2 was closer to the pocket than i thought. Im getting too used to watching matches in HD lol

Yeah, I just watched how he got in that situation. Ugh. It's hard to be honest and say exactly how I would have played the 2-5 combo since I know what the outcome is but I'd like to believe I would have aimed for the left half of the 5 knowing fewer problems would result. He was very fortunate that he had a bank-shot available to him.

Man... You guys have been holding out on the rest of us more than a prom date that doesn't drink!

Corey didn't even hesitate to see this shot or shoot it. Great out! Thanks for sharing.

Oh no. I gave it up the moment I found it. I was as cheap a date as could be.

Sweet out! I called it early in the thread and thought about it as long as Corey did. Big points to Jude for finding this.

It was easier than one would expect. Go to youtube. keywords: jcin corey deuel john schmidt 8ball. Bang, first result.

i don't get it

did everyone see this match and know the shot and the outcome. This is AZBilliards not twitter or something like that. I'm honestly shocked that it took more than 3 post the mention that.

I guess some wanted to seem smart (congrats to the ones who called it without seeing the match)

No, minus the original poster and perhaps a couple of people here, most did not see the video until after I posted it. With a title thread about what to do in an 8ball game, it's going to attract the forum's 8ball players. The array of answers were not surprising (at least, to me) because you have to play banks and caroms all the time in advanced 8ball. For most advanced 8ball players, they're desperately looking for a way to run out and most of the time, an aggressive strategy is the way to go.

Maybe next time don't say who is playing. Just say that it's two pros. That way when we get it right, people won't wonder if we saw the match as much.
