What Would You Have Done

I would have banked the eight up table leaving as cose to the rail as possible and trying to leave the CB behind the 9 or on the rail.

I wouldn't , probably , try to carom the 9 (to make it) since I would probably leave it in the jaws and an easy loss of game if there is a bank back left on the 8.

For all those who suggested banking...the issue was that the cushions were so terribly inconsistent that banking was basically out of the question.

I can't imagine a table so bad that you wouldn't even attempt banking a ball to center of the opposite rail. ;) If true , what were you even wasting your time playing on it for.

I would have played the 8 ball off the end rail and behind the 9, leaving the cue ball as close to the end rail as possible. If I did not get the 8 behind the 9, the best shot he would have is a bank into the side assuming the CB would come off the rail at least some given the angle into the 8.

Sorry...I thought you meant bank it to make it. I didn't read your post carefully enough. But others did suggest trying to bank the 8 in. As for wasting my time...it is true that the table conditions were the same for everyone but had I known in advance how poor they were, I would not have attended the event.

tap tap to Mully's safety.... I'd bet on a safety player over a gofer anytime.
