What's considered a heavy cue butt?

Real quick question, what is considered too heavy of a cue butt? 15.5oz and higher? Just curious as I want to have a cue butt made but am not sure of what weight. I think I tend to favor the weight at around 14.7oz to 14.8oz but am just curious as I see alot of the custom butt weights in the for sale section at around 15.2oz and higher. Seems alot of the production cues are below the 15oz mark, maybe because of the ability to use a weight bolt they make the cues lighter? Im guessing alot of custom cue weights cannot be changed?

My experience on choosing cue weight is that you have to work backwards, in other words, what is the TOTAL cue weight (butt and shaft) that you are most comfortable playing. Then look at the shafts that you want to use - no matter what type of shaft - consider their individual weight - many fall in the 3.6 to 3.8 ounce range. So if you like a 19 ounce cue weight, and your shafts are 3.8 ounces, look for a 15.2 ounce butt. All that being said - it is not all about cue weight, my opinion is that cue balance - how a complete cue FEELS in your hands can vary even by cues of the same total weight, so you have to look at the cue maker- custom or production, to understand their individual cue balance properties by trying their cue, and then decide which total cue weight from that particular cue producer makes sense for you.

From my perspective, there are two aspects to the question of how much weight is too heavy. How much would be too heavy for you and what would be too heavy if you try to sell the cue in the future?

For the second question, I would consider 16 oz and above to be "heavy", unless the cuemaker is Szamboti or South West. In those cases, I would say they are just about right.

Many custom cue butt weights can be adjusted. Some cannot.

not all cues of the same weight will feel the same ... balance point can make a cue feel heavier or lighter in your hand.

try as many cues as possible to see what you like best
