Yeah makes sense now lol. I'd be willing to bet the next round of pints if I had a couple of those guys on my side and thirsty :p

What do folks typically do with the large bets (50+), do you find a middleman like a bouncer or barman to hold it? Or let either know about it and hang it from the light? Or do you just trust the guy to pay up?

I will never trust them to pay up! Money is held by someone or on the light.

I was playing a guy a $20 race to 3 in 8 ball. I ran 2 racks in 3 turns at the table. The 3rd game I missed after my 5th shot but left him nothing. He tried to quit saying he was to drunk. I said shoot or pay up. Went back and forth and then the bouncer stepped in when I grabbed the butt of his break cue he was trying to put away and was going to bust his head. I still never got paid but have a souvenir in the butt of his cue and a cue holder.

I seen the guy again at a charity event for a friend who has stage 4 cancer. We talked about the situation and I agreed to give back his cue if he put the $20 he owed me in the charity can.

I would think a skill level or 2 above your opponent would be great to gather a few bucks.
Only problem for me is that I would need to increase my skill level by 1 or 2 levels just get myself in that position against the bangers.:scratchhead:

Any one can match up.....
What it comes down too is,...knowing and Being honest with yourself about your true consistent speed is most important, then knowing how well the other person plays relative to you get you in the ball park when matching up.
Not sure?....dont bet the farm the first set..

When you're new to the game anyone will gamble with you but you suck and need a lot of weight.

When you get quite a bit better you can still find a lot of people to gamble with but you aren't the most consistent and probably don't have a lot of confidence in yourself.

When you get to be an A player you will mostly only be playing other A players but many of these people will be willing to bet a lot.

When you get to pro caliber many people won't play you without getting a lot of weight.

What do you think is the best time?

In the purest sense of your question, gambling only, the best skill to have is to recognize how to always make a game that you feel you have an edge. When you become a master of that, your actual skill level becomes largely irrelevant. I've seen mediocre players profit consistently and world class players go broke because of how well or poorly they make games. Getting better always helps, because you'll have better control over the game itself, but it's not critical to gambling successfully. Simply stated, know thyself, know your opponent.

I consider myself a low or mid level B player but I would never gamble for a large amount with someone who was far above my level. I will only play for an amount that I can afford to lose and in the past, when I have played for money that I could not afford to lose, I was too nervous to play my normal game.
