What's the best way to clean a dirty ferrule?

yep i had a similar experience with the eraser..........does a super job but you dont want to rub it over anything glossy.......took the gloss off the ring at the bottom of a shaft.....made it look faded out, hoping some furniture polish brings it back
 
Magic Eraser® packaging specifically states "not recommended for wood".
'Nuf said IMO.

Troy - Couldn't find any reference to wood on my (older) package, but it clearly stated "...Test first on an inconspicuous spot with light presssure to see if surface may scratch. Not recommended for use on surfaces that are polished/glossy, or on finishes that are brushed, satin or dark."

I still like the old standby, Pearl Drops Tooth Polish on a soft cloth. You can still find it at drug stores.

All I ever do is dampen a white cloth and zap it in the microwave for 15 seconds so it's steaming and wipe.
 
I'm a little new to all this but I have used Novus 2 (red bottle) on my ferrel and it worked very well. It is a scratch remover for plexiglass so it is a very very mild abrasive. I also use it on guitar finishes which are generally finished in lacquer. Doesn't raise the grain on the shaft like water will. They sell a Novus 1 (blue bottle) which is a spray which you can follow up the Novus 2 with but it really isn't necessary on a shaft.

You can buy the stuff at a Harley Davidson store and other places that sell plexiglass supplies.

Great Ferrule Cleaner

I take an old toothbrush and some rembrandt whitening tootpaste , put a small amount of toothpaste on brush ,,,,no water, and brush the ferrule gently and it returns to a bright white and then of course wipe dry with paper towel. Works great for me.
 
I must be remembering an old package. The new package states "Not recommended for use on surfaces that are polished/glossy, or on finishes that are brushed, satin or dark"
