the wedge
As I understand it from magazine articles and old illustrations, it went like this: In the begining, pool was a croquet like game played on grass with mallots..."maces". When the game came indoors, the mallot heads became thin flat crosspieces on the end of the handle. They were used for a push stroke. Then someone turned thier "mace" around backwards, using the crosspiece as the handle and the former handle end to hit the ball for better accuracy. The flat "wedge" on the butt , which was now the business end of the stick, was added so the stick would slide accross the cloth with less tendancy to roll. Then someone took off the crosspiece and turned the stick back arround so they could use the thin end of the handle, where the crosspiece used to be, to hit the ball for still better accuracy. The "wedge" remained, although not needed. Leather tips and chalk followed.
