What's the ruling? (VNEA)

This situation was pretty unique. I was playing in a VNEA 8-ball tournament. Playing on 7' coin-ops. My opponent's break. He breaks the rack from the right side and the 8ball shoots straight into the corner where he's standing. He instinctively reaches into the pocket to grab the 8, and as he does, another ball (3) hits his wrist and rebounds back onto the playing surface contacting another ball. He has the 8 in his hand, looks at me and says "what do we do with the 3?". "I dunno, let's get a ref" I say. The ref comes over, and we explain what happened. The ref says "foul, ball in hand anywhere on the table". My opponent was beside himself. I ran out the rack, and ended up winning the match. All my opponent could talk about for a week was how I screwed him out of that game.

Was that the correct ruling?

All I can tell you is you don't ever grab a ball out of a pocket that it's about to go into in a match in which you care a whit about who wins.

In fact, just don't do it at all, then you won't do it accidentally when it would matter.

ruling

The ruling was partially correct. It was a foul, but you should have received ball in hand behind the line, since this was from the break - just like nay other scratch or foul on the break.

I am not sure if you would have the option of reracking and breaking since he did make the 8 ball. But that might have aslo been an option if balls were tied up and you didn't liek the rack

foul

It is a foul and you could break if you want or spot the eight and the 3, put the other ball moved back and shoot from behind the headstring. You will never get ball in hand anywhere on the table ofter the break. Unsportsmanlike conduct could also be called and lose of game.

The ref was totally correct

Interfering with ball in motion is a foul separate from the break shot and should result in a BIH anywhere on the table.

I was wondering about that. My dilema was that if you make the 8 on the break and scratch it's a loss, so why not a loss on the foul in this circumstance. But, I see your point.

This occured on a bar-box table, and the rules are that if the 8 goes in on the break, then it's spotted? Assuming that the bar-box table isn't open, so someone would have to pay to retrieve the 8 ball?

So the guy was trying to be the hero and grab the 8 to save time, effort, and money, and instead he becomes the goat, and costs himself a foul and the game?

That's ironically funny...

VNEA rules? 8 on the break is not a win. It gets spotted or you reracked Correct? Is it a loss if you scatch, or in this case foul when you make the 8?

This is correct

Although the 3 is a seperate foul, it resulted as a result of interference with the break shot, and break shot foul rules still apply. Everything is correct above except the 3 does not get spotted along with the 8, the 3 ball goes down since it would have gone in the pocket. (same as if a piece of chalk blocked the hole when a ball was going in). Otherwise, everything else is right as stated above.

I would say the ref was partially right. VNEA rules you can not touch a moving ball. If so it is consider a foul. However I believe it would be up to you to have the eightball spotted and the other balls left down, with you shooting out of the kitchen: or re rack and it's your break. You did not cheat the guy you taught him a valuable lesson.

In the Valley league I played on:

1) Any time the 8 was pocketed and the cue was pocketed in the same shot, it was a loss.

2) If you just scratched on the 8 without pocketing the 8, then it was ball in hand for the opponent.

3) If you made the 8 on the break and did not scratch, the 8 was either spotted or it was a re-rack.

4) A scratch on the break, without pocketing the 8, was CB behind the line for the opponent.

This is what I was basing my response on. Hope that clears it up a little.
