What's with this mystery APA handicapping computer program?

I made the mistake of walking to the wrong side of the computer table at a tournament. The two guys immediately closed their laptops and asked me to step to the other side of the table. At the time I thought WTF but later I learned they would have had to kill me if I saw anymore.

So I got that going for me.

7's (no matter how good they play) are a LIABILITY

Even if your anchor/superstar/best player SL7 is kicking butt all over the league they are handcuffing your roster.

And that coming from someone who handcuffs my team's roster every week.

Welcome to the 23 point rule.

Definitely wrong. Our 7 plays almost every week and has not lost 8-ball in over a year. The team only has to win two out of four to win the match, not three out of five. You have to get good 3s and 4s. A superstar 7 is a major asset if you have the rest of the handicaps right. But your point is valid, just that it is more emphasized in 9-ball where an SL9 is liability (and would be the case if you had a load of SL5s in 8-ball)

I hear it's all hush hush and hoosh hoosh, (to quote Terry Thomas from "It's a MAd Mad MAd World")

It is, but it just takes some common sense and an Excel spreadsheet to figure out the basic concept.

In 2004 I was on a nine ball team in Vegas

7 - not the prettiest way to get around the table, but WOW what an exceptional "will to win". When the heat was on he simply did not miss, shape was still ugly though.

4 - Similar will to win, very gut wrenching to watch, and has a TON of heart. Came from behind to win in almost all of his matches, even after being raised to a 5.

4 - Circus shooter, inconsistent, may play close to 6 speed one day; can't make 3 balls in a row on another. Trianed very hard to shoot only the percentage shots prior to the event. Ended up playing WAY over his head all weekend, still red-flagged after being raised to a 5. I also got my first break-and-run patch that weekend.

3 - Nice stroke, good mentality, very competative. Rightfully got raised to a 4 near the end of the tourney

3 - Fairly well rounded game (for a 3), good knowledge base, head gets in the way at times. Still a 3 today, and a VERY good one

3 - Good saftey and percentage player (for a 3), doesn't have the stroke to get around the table as well as we would like. Is also a VERY good 3 today.

One sour team after losing to us said, "There is no way you guys are going anywhere with a 7 and a bunch of 3's and 4's on the team."

We only had 6 players
Our team chemistry was excellent that weekend

We got 5th place, and loved every minute of it

It was a GREAT experience and I wish it to all whom are going this year.

--GOOD LUCK--
