some days im just not concerned with it and making nice shots,
one day practicing I hit over 30 points, in a few hrs of course
but the instant I decide I want to check out my average, its day and night
I go 1 out of 20 or so

my high run is 5 so far in 3c
remember ive only been playing since april, still a newb

what are your averages and high runs

My high run is 14. Since my averages were never documented, many players say i average btw 800 to 875.

By the way, what i get for that is the Max ($335) entry fee to play in usba tournament. Oh no thanks.

My high run is 6, which I have had about 5 times. (Yeah, painful to not break through to 7, I've missed an absolute natural to an enormous ball for 7 twice...)

I've played tournaments where my average for the tournament (8 matches or so) ends up being .35 or so. I've had matches to 25 where my average was .5. It's hard to say though, because it seems like in tournaments, folks play a bit more defensive when the shot is not fairly straight forward. I can admit to doing the same.

I need to start tracking innings whenever I play I reckon.

High run is a five. I never checked but I am pretty sure I am below .5

Yeah, tracking the innings is the tricky part. I play about half my billiards with a friend who is a little better than me, We have decided to try to change how we play when we are playing together. Instead of playing to a set number of points we are going to start playing 10 inning games. Maybe "top of the fourth, bottom of the fifth" baseball style thinking about the innings will help us stay on track. Then just by moving the decimal point we can get a game average, and aggregating results for a longer term average would also be easy.

Also, since the games will be shorter more of the time will be in that "near the end of the game" time when the pressure goes up. And I hope that more pressure more of the time will help with improving my play under pressure.

We'll see. We just talked about it yesterday after a session and decided to give it a try next time.

sounds like a good idea

It didn't pan out in practice. 3C players are resistant to change, apparently. I found an app for scorekeeping that counts innings (mentioned in another thread) that I have hopes for if we ever get a league or tournament organized. I'll never get them to use it during casual play.

I now have the ability to video my play, so I may just start doing that and then going back and counting innings.

If I had to guess I'd say I'm in a similar ballpark as beneath_the_sur.

I believe in the numbers. Follow your play consistently and you will truly know your ability and be able to measure improvement. Ahhhh.... but how to do that.

I bought one of those little clicker-counter devices on ebay some time ago that I keep in my cue case. Whenever I play I try to follow a set routine. Get up from my seat with my cue and chalk, plan the shot, execute, pickup my chalk, post my score, return to my seat, click my inning.

When I get home I add the game to my stats. When I first started playing some years ago I was like many in the 200's... I'm now in the low 300's... but I have more games (occasionally) in the 400's than ever...

It's tough.
