When is cloth installed new, tight enough?

I just took a pair of Vise Grips that had worn out teeth in the jaws and welded a couple of 1 1/2" x 3" strips of 3/16" steel in the jaws. They are essentially a set of duck bill pliers. Kinda like the ones below but my jaws are parallel with each other when closed.

I use 2 of them, but didn't modify either of them, they're just fine stock.

Definitely not mine, you have a good memory, I do in fact have GCI.:):) The Diamond in the picture is how the tables are being covered in our area by the large amusement company that rents/leases out the tables. It blows my mind that they do not have someone capable to recover tables much less a table mechanic. The other thing that amazes me are the people in our league, some how are very good players, who didnt see what was wrong when I pointed this out. The last thing I am is a table mechanic but how can people not notice that you cant shoot a ball down the rail past the side pocket on these tables. The fold on the point sticks out about an 1/8" from the rail.
That would drive me crazy with those side pocket points sticking out into the field of play.

I didnt modify mine either, rather than go to a store and buy them I used one of the 100 that I have that were worn out and some cold rolled steel that I always have on hand. Regular Vice Grips are virtually useless when the teeth in the jaws wear out, I just happened to find a use for a retired pair. :):)

Absolutely, plus you cant play a ball down the rail past the side pocket. What really blows me away are some of the people who have been playing pool for decades, some mid 600 level Fargo that didnt notice anything unusual. Maybe I am OCD but to me that's a pretty obvious butcher job.

Well I think the tightness of cloth is effected by temperature , barometric pressure, and humidity in room where pool table sits.

That could be minimized by heating the bed like they do on Carom tables? I think I even seen something about heated snooker tables as well.

Look into the cost of that for me will ya. Include the electrical wiring cost while you're at it. Then maybe you'll figure out why pool tables don't have heated slates. Wouldn't surprise me if the cost was at least $1500+ per table.

Also, if you just think running extension cords to the table for the power source, think again. And if you run the electrical wiring through plastic coving, check to see how much that'll raise your business insurance for liability lawsuits.

You are more than likely right about it being cost prohibitive. I was just mentioning it as it would minimize problems from temp and humidity changes.

This subject has been brought up many times in the past, ending with each time not realizing the cost of doing such a thing. If you buy a 3C table new, then the heating system is included in that price, as expected, but buying any new 3C table is going to cost a ton, as they're not made in America, so shipping is going to be added to the price of the table as well. Humidity issues on a pool table is always equal for all players involved no matter what, play or don't play, the table don't care.
