When is it time to take a break from pool?

Not in 9 ball, 10 ball or 8 ball.

In the UK American style pocket billiards hasn't taken off yet, but it is getting more popular.

The really good players play snooker and English 8 ball. And although it would be nice to play against stiffer opposition, the thought of playing 8 ball on a 6ft table with 2" balls and a 1 7/8" CB just isn't appealing. Although I enjoy watching snooker, playing the game has bored me for 10 years now.

I might devote some time to one pocket and 14.1, both of which I've hardly ever played. Hopefully the difference in tactics can not only help by learning a "new" game but also improve my 8 9 and 10 ball game.

Not so sure about one hole....NO disrespect intended. But I would URGE you to take up 14.1. It will be a huge challenge to get up to speed in that game and it requires virtually all the skills associated with any of the other games so it can only help.

In the Golden Era of Mosconi, Lassiter etc. 14.1 was THE Championship game and for lots of excellent reasons. It died for many reasons...not the least of which was the time it took to complete a match which became increasingly problematic because of television.

But it is a GREAT game.

Other than that, I would suggest you covert from getting your jollies in gambling matches against others and start competing with your toughest competitor...yourself.

What is your average score against the Ghost? Improve it.

Set up "typical layouts" and figure out how to get shape on the next shot 2 or 3 different ways because the table will demand that of you...a LOT.

Play safeties...even when you can make the shot...to simulate times when you don't WANT to make the next shot. Keep a log and RATE youself on the outcome of safeties.

When I was playing my strongest, I found that I much preferred to "practice against objectives" than to compete against others.

But finally, there is nothing at all wrong with just taking some time off. How much? Don't play until you MISS playing.

You're from west yorkshire, aren't you? Aside from Melling & Appleton, I could name a dozen extremely strong players within 15 miles. You're not short of good competition.

Have you thought about playing on MMTV? Or GB9? One of the tour venues is Leeds/Bradford next year. They will provide you with something to focus on. Although it's true there are few American pool players, the structures that are in place for the serious player are second to none.

Read it. Read it again. Then again.

I'm thinking of dying my hair jet black, buying some black clothes and listening to some heavy metal that relates to my deep depression about life!

This is prabably the reason for lack of interest .
Hard to enjoy anything when your depressed. I don't enjoy playing when I'm not 100 percent there. I play for the competition and justification of playing good, not so much losing because my minds on other stuff.
I wrote this whole post and didn't curse 1 Dam time
Alrighty lol
