Where did the term "shortstop" come from?

I've also heard it referred to as the best of local talent. I think everyone on here has a pretty good grasp of what it means though.
 
I also thought it was used to describe the best local player....and assumed if the best local player was beaten by the road player; that was it for the road player in that town, making it a short stop. You don't want your first set/game/match-up to be with the best local player - kills most of your action.

then again, some of the other explanations make sense to me too....and I'm USUALLY wrong anyway :sorry:
