Where to get a 4" long 5/16" -18 piloted tap?

I am wondering where I can get a 4" long 5/16" - 18 piloted tap? And i was wondering if anybody has used 5/16-18 A-joint pins before? or are the threads not big enough to give it strenghth there? I am wanting a tap to do the joint pin just to let u know. just wondered about using it for the A-joint for now tell i get a 3/8 - 16 piloted?

3/8 10 or ball screw, piloted are what I'd recommend.
5/16 18 is not designed to go on bare wood.

thank you

thank you Joey!! I see what you mean. what do u think about 3/8 - 10 for the A-joint? probably bad huh. A 3/8 - 16 would be better

Still looking!!

i am still wondering if anybody can help me find where i can get a 4" or so long 5/16 - 18 piloted tap?
or a place where they can grind a pilot nose on a tap for me? ty

Geez, the internet is a big old place...try google and type in what you are looking for.....

5/16 X 18 tap.........then read a few offerings from google, you might find exactly what you are looking for...

try: cuesmith.com , cuestik.com..................

try the search feature on this forum.

d_flash...can't figure out why someone would try to tap wood with fine threads, improbable, plus the threads won't hold.....

Check with atlas

Check with the boys at Atlas. They used to sell them but they closed them out. However, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

one of the guys from atlas pointed me to here. He said somebody might sell me one used or tell me where I can buy one that will have a pilot or even a ground nose. Thank you all so far for your replies!!!

Do a search on taps on this forum as Mike Webb has stated, more than once, where he has his odd, special taps made. He is very happy with their services, however, be prepared for a sticker shock.

wttool.com is another place where you can go to buy what you are requesting but atlas or prather is really where you should be looking.

With whatever you are doing, you might be better off buying Chris Hightower's book. It will explain all the uses for the different taps and the drills to use with the taps. Normally, the 5/16x18 size is used for cutting threads into ferrules, not for cutting threads for the joint pin. If you are going to use that size pin for your joint, you need a brass insert that can be purchased from atlas, or prather. That brass insert is going to need a 7/16x14 tap to install. That will require a good amount of know how and the right equipment.

If you were connecting metal into wood threads, use a 3/8 size pin with either a ball screw, 10, or 11 TPI. 14 and 18 TPI's use brass inserts.

With whatever you're trying to do, it seems like you at least have an interest in tinkering around with your own equipment, and if that's the case, invest in some educational material. Good Luck.
