Where to grab your cue?

Hi,

I've been doing some research in order to improve my stance for playing pools. I read in books and several instructional videos stating that you should always grab the cue stick at around 4-6 inches behind the balance point (except some special cases).

I got a Balabushka GB-06 and tried to do that, it helped. However recently I tried to grab further back and found out it helps me improving my accuracy and feel more comfortable (I'm 1.84cm tall). I also watched videos of top players in tournaments and saw them mostly grab really far back of the cue stick (Ralf Souquet, Earl Strickland,.. to name a few).

So my question is, is there a standard for grabbing your cue stick? Cause what top players are doing differs from what the instructional videos and books tell me to do!

You have bought into one of the biggest myths in the pool world.
Let's think rationally about this for a minute. Suppose we take your buska and put it in the hands of Jose Parika and see where he holds it. Then we put the same cue in the hands of a player who is 6'4" tall. Would you think they would both grip the cue in the same place? Of course not! The balance point of the cue has little or nothing to do with where you hold it. That is determined by the body style of the shooter. Tall, long arms, are going to require holding the cue much closer to the butt than a shorter player.

If you really want to know where to hold it, get into the ball address position with the tip about 1/4 inch away from the cue ball. At this point, your forearm (between the elbow and your grip hand) should be at a 90 degree angle to the cue stick. If your cue is almost level, that would put your grip hand directly under your elbow.

Thank you very much! So what the balance of the pool cue has to do with anything, I might ask?

koivn...Nothing. Like Steve said, hold your cue where your grip hand falls directly under your elbow...period. Cuemakers can make the balance point forward or backward...it makes no difference, except personal preference.

Just to recap:

When the tip of your cue is at the cue ball, your hand should be directly under your elbow....randyg
