I wouldn't go so far as to say that. I know one of his ex-girlfriends whom he dated for quite a time and he would just play her all the time and play her as though he was playing for the World Championships, too! In fact, she was there when he won it!

I can tell you that for the last 3 weeks Mika had been in Finland, enjoying a short vacation or so until last Tuesday when he flew to Japan for the Open.

ever since going into a business venture in the phillipines a few years ago, there seems to have been less and less of mika, because i get the feeling he's enjoying the asian lifestyle.

unfortunate because he might be forgetting what got he him there.

hmmmm...interesting. What do you mean when you say he played her like he was playing for the World Championships?

that business venture was ephemeral. some might be having the feeling that he's into less action but maybe that's because he's relatively a staple in asian events: in japan and philippines. i am not aware of all the western participants in the japan open but from what i read it seemed only mika and ralph are from west. btw, efren won that event. ;)

i also think there's less fuss about him but it could be because his name didn't surface quite often among the winners in 2004.

i learned after almost two weeks that he won against ralph in the finals in an event in switzerland early in feb 2005. i frequent matchroomsportforums and was surprised that nobody there posted about this.

so maybe it's because he's not winning as much as he used to and maybe because he keeps on moving quite often.

I mean, Mika plays EVERYONE in EVERY situation like EVERYTHING is at stake. His girlfriend of the time used to complain that she'd never get an opportunity to shoot whenever she played him (which was absolutely true) and Mika's response was, "No Mercy!"

She'd complain but it didn't really bother her. She knew how serious he took the game and understood that in order to be the best, it was important that he took every shot seriously, no matter what was at stake. She's actually a solid pool player so when she got bored of racking for him, she'd merely demand a ridiculous spot (and the breaks so she wouldn't have to rack) or play someone else. It was actually quite amusing to watch.

I just want to add that Mika has got to be the most serious pool competitor I've ever met. His entire day is devoted to the game in one form or another. Really, he doesn't waste his time. The guy seems like he's prepared to win no matter what the contest may be. He doesn't get tired. He doesn't get bored. Physically and mentally, he's as ready as he's going to be. That isnt' to say that the other players in the area don't love the game as much as he does. All I'm saying is that none go through as tough a preparation routine.

n.

he's actually quite a star in the phillipines, i understand,,,,,and he likes that. but i guess, he might be parlaying all that notoriety into business opportunities, which is the smart thing to do. it's nowheresville here in the states.

I know Mika will be competing in the European Championships shortly, just check his website it must have a schedule for him.

I saw Mika in Japan playing in a big tournament there just a couple days ago. He was looking very sharp and playing really strong. I believe he has decided to focus more on competing in Asia for now.

I am not sure about the sponsorship situation in Taiwan and China; I think the Japanese definitely are happy to see him there. He certainly serves to represent his sponsors in a very positive fashion in public.
