The room that recently opened in the last 6 months is doing fairly well for a poolroom that doesn't serve alcohol. The owner is having (trying to have) 6 ball on Wed. night, 8 ball on Friday night, and 9 ball on Sunday's. When he first started he was having good turnouts. Players were coming from all around to play.

Lately, the turnout hasn't been so good. And I know the weather plays a big part in that as well. When you ask them why they don't show up for the tourney they say they can only win if they play their best. Well, I don't know about you guys but I would much rather play in a tournament that I can win if I play my best than one that I can win no matter what. If it is about the money then fine.

So would you guys rather take the easy pocket change or the hard fought cash?

Easy money is nice, but I have always been a fan of testing myself. I think unless you challenge yourself, be it at pool or anything else, you will never improve at it. JMO.

I have noticed that just about all tournaments come and go in waves. When a poolroom here just openned there was a sat. night tournament that did well for about 3 months then just fell off till it wasn't held anymore. samething happened to the 8ball tournament that lasted only maybe 2 months. weekly tournaments just don't seem to have longevity as say maybe having two or three 500-1000 added a year every year. some places the tournament is usually only as big as the scud-bucket drawing they have. It's sad but it is almost like the novelty of a new toy wearing away...
 
We run a series of tourneys in my area, none in the pool hall due to the fact that the one in town is just a front. We hold them in taverns and clubs, but everyone that participates is there to win, even those that know their chances are long. Speaking with the more seasoned players they watch the players who aren't favorites and are always quick to pass on advice or accolades when those same players show real progress. The "Old Guns" are happy to encourage the "Young Guns" and maybe this area is unique in that the players all have a passion to improve the caliber of their competition.
The main answer I believe to getting full tournaments is keeping the entry fee low enough not to burden the weaker players but still high enough to give a decent payout. In my area we have also adapted to a running format, in other words a weekly or bi-weekly tournament where the players accumulate points each week, with a "Tournament of Champions" at the end where some players get in with accumulated points. Hey it?s always worth a try?

I'd rather push myself and lose than not push myself and win.
Plus if I lose, at least I have the opportunity to learn from a better player, and come back stronger the following week.
 
Winning a "sure thing" tournament is nice and the money is great. However I believe that it feels so much better to even place in a tournament where you have to play your best, especially if you win!
 
I love to play in tournaments that I know I have to bring my best game to even stand a chance. The entry fee here is only $12. Not alot of cash but the calcutta can pay a couple of hundred.

Speaking with the owner today he is really committed to having good tournaments. He is even tossing around the idea of having a $1000 added tournament. That would be a big deal for this area too. There are some things that have kept players from coming and those are being fixed. He doesn't have a full grill as of yet just microwave. It's not great but he wanted to test the waters before he went all out. And now he is going all out.

The place is located in a hole by the name of Campton, Ky. If any of you live close or are traveling through stop in. It is located about 1 hour east of Lexington. It is a really nice place with amenities being added all the time.
