Which Plain jane to buy - Bender, SW, Bluegrass, Zylr, Sugartree

SW cue will be ur best bet!:)

Bender is another alternative while Bluegrass n Zylr is not as hot as last yr(i might be wrong)

Sugartree is great hitter...tried one n was impressed!

For SW, cuz its a little more pricy. I am kinda holding out for a PJ coco style or another wood thats a bit more rare. Not sure if they make those though.

I am pretty tempted by Pharoah's Bender, because i have two others and can swap shafts on them, but i noticed Bender has a solid rep but his cue prices hasn't been making upward movements for a while, while i see some of the other cue makers search up (and down :()

What I think you have to be concerned with is not what is going on right now but what has been going on for the last decade.

I've been fortunate enough to own three benders and all three increased in value. While I don't know anything about the other cue makers except for SW, I think buying their cues for potential increased value is like buying an IPO, but you never know....

But it's Bender hands down (and the more detail you can get in one)

Nice choices...

In terms of a buying strategy, assuming I would want to try them all first...

My first choice would be the Sugartree, as this seems to be the most elusive cue on the market right now... but they are still pretty affordable...

The Zylr would be 2nd for the same reason...

(checking here and eBay, you could get both of these right now for less than 2k!--dude, do it! Had I the cash I would)

The Bluegrass and the Bender (and the BCM) seem to have a steady supply of cues that come and go in the 2ndary...and I'm sure you won't have a prob finding one to pick up and try...

And the SW is just SW... they will cost $$$ and will likely go up, but imo there will always be good supply of these...

As far as playing, I like my BCM, it's a very solid hit... I also like the McDaniel I just picked up, good balance... I liked the Alex Brick that I just sold, also very solid... and, I would pick up a Zylr based on trying my friend's sneaky. And I hear, but haven't experienced, that Rick Howard and Jeff Olney both make KILLER PJ cues as well, as does Murray Tucker.

Of course, the never ending supply of cash has not materialilzed for me, so overall having to choose, I want to hold out for a nice 1 of 1 Bender to collect and perhaps having a JF SW to play with (along with another Brick, the BCM, a Bender, a Sugartree, a Zylr, a Howard, and the McDaniel... :D )

...My name is Paul and I'm a cue addict...thanks for letting me share...

jeeves' southwest cue

 :) I am really on the fence about selling this cue. it is a gourgeous wood combination.

In a plain jane its always hard to make a profit on resale. Not that big of a market for plain jane cues imho.

I'd personally buy a sugartree or a bluegrass. I shoot with a sugartree now and can say its my favorite out of a couple hundred cue's I've owned. I've never said that one before about any cue. Always had a few old time favorites that I wish I had back. Not wishing that currently. Of course I only have about 20 hours or so on the sugartree so have owned it for about 3 weeks. But it is the one new cue I've had in the last couple of years that I haven't considered selling though I've had a couple of offers already.

Bluegrass values have remained consistent in my opinion over the last couple of years, and they do hit very well in my opinion.

Thanks for all the helpful posts. For now, I am gonna take Pharoahs PJ Bender with the pigskin wrap.it does look pretty nice. just waiting for him to confirm the specs for the shaft stuff.

if i see a nice sugartree available on the market, i might buy one to try it out.

I dont have any amazingly beautiful cues, but do have three decent ones (10 pt bender, 5 pt bender and a 8 pt skip with ivory jt, rings, forearm and butt diamonds)..and i tihnk there is a certain beauty to a nice PJ using a nice wood.

Thanks for the help. Will let u know how tihs bender plays once i can get my hands on it.

I think you made a wise choice with the Bender. And knowing Brian, it is probably in excellent condition. A little birdy told me he has been logging in time on a Josey s/p as his daily player.:)

Just to add a comment....SW, Bender, and Blue Grass have paid their 'dues', so to speak, and have earned their place in the market, secondary or otherwise. I am not saying that both Zylr and Sugartree do not deserve to be there, but I feel it is simply too soon to predict what share of the market they will be able to sustain. Remember, they are in much the same position as Gilbert and Skip Weston were just a few years ago.

As to Gilberts and Westons cue values waning over the last couple of years...I recently had to sell my Skip, which I designed, and I did pretty okay with it, not to mention it sold pretty darn fast...even for a cue with hearts in it!...lol. Here's what I think, for what it's worth: The very thing that was making Gilbert and Weston cues so popular, is the very thing effecting their decline in value. Everybody, but everybody wanted them to do the traditional designs in their cues...which they could execute extremely well. The problem is, after a while, all those traditional looking cues begin to look cookie cutter cues. I have noticed that the cues that do seem to sell well from these makers are those designs that are more original...which they are beginning to do more and more of...thankfully.

Anyway....I think you made a fine choice with the Bender, and I bet you're pretty happy with it. And I am betting that Brian will regret selling it.:)

You made a good choice. I have a Bender exactly like the one you are getting, except mine has linen wrap and it hits good. In fact, IMO, better than the pointed Benders that I have shot with.

There is a Sugartree on the market right now. I'm pretty sure that you will not like the Irish Linen Wrap, but it can be re-wraped.

My pick would be the SUGARTREE....the value in the secondary market is well beyond what Eric charges now! 2-5 years from now, he will have a 6-8 year waiting list and his prices will be tripled.

But My reasoning is the hit!!!!!!!! Man can these cue hit, I have played with SEVERAL cues and the Sugartree is hands down bar none at least a 1/2 ton better than most on the market today( I know hit is subjective BTW ) but to me , right now a Sugartree is a lil brother to SW in the value and collectibilty dept. , but when it comes to playability, SW becomes the lil Brother to the Sugartree :D ...........

**** funny story***** I was playing In a tourney the other day using my schon, and talking to it, and it was so sad, because the schon asked me if he would ever grow up to be a Sugartree....* sigh* it was so sad but I had to say " sorry lil friend but you will never be a Sugartree :D that was a hard moment for a dad, to have to tell his step-cue that he will never be good enuff. This moron moment brought to you by the makers of PROZAC " The every unbalanced mans friend" :D :D

I am a very honest person, and very plain spoken, and I can tell you right here and now, that I wouldnt take any plain SW for my sugartree......I wouldnt even consider it. But that is just me, I know my cue, and I know Eric will make sure I am a happy customer, he has already proven that,( fixing one of my STUPID MISTAKES:mad:  ) and even offers to warranty my 2 shafts..... Buying one of his cue is as enjoyable as it gets. He makes you almost happy to spend your money.....even if you have to eat Bologna instead of ham for a week or two :D

O YEA in case I was too vague.......I would go with the Sugartree;) :D :D
