Which side of the leather to be used?

Hello.

Just a quick newbie question. I bought a leather to burnish shaft and tip. It has a smooth side and a rough side (like the outside and inside of a leather jacket, respectively). Which side should I use?

Rough first, then smooth.

In additon, I have used white buffing rouge on a piece of leather when used in conjuction with micro sanding papers. After the last paper (14000 grit I think) I spin the shaft with the leather for a glass smooth finish.
