Whisler & John Madden Cues

It is my opinion that John Madden and Scott Whisler build the nicest, best hitting cues coming out of Arizona. I own a Madden, a Whisler and a BCM and much prefer to play with the Madden or the Whisler over any other cue. Why aren't the Madden's and the Whisler more highly regarded locally and around the country??

I think John Madden is in Montana;

Ted-You are correct but I think he spent most of his life in the Phoenix. Also-I understand that your cues are absolutely first rate!! :D

Thank you for the endorsement. I was 6 mos old when my parents moved to Arizona - this was way back when - when you had a water bag hanging in front of the radiator to keep it cool so you didn't break down. You went to Vegas or California at night - again since it was cooler so you didn't break down - Phoenix was about 50,000 (in '46 - just about as close to native as you can get) now about 2 million. Moved to western Montana last year - one of the reasons - in-laws are in 80's - poor health - Parkinsons. But I will always go back to AZ - all my g-kids are there. Web page is due to be updated around the first of the year- have some new looking stuff going on- if you are interested send me your email and will email you some pictures.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!

First off Jack Maden makes a very nice cue. I have seen and tested many and they play as nice as they look. Never really understood why he doesnt finish the butt.

BCM - another very nice cue. I personally know Bryan and have seen his work. I have never met a custom cuemaker that is so detailed about his work. Also a great guy.

But if we are making a list of Best in Arizona, how can you leave off Sierra Custom Cues?

My oppinion Sierra and BCM are the best.

I do. I do put finish on the butt when it is requested - change the bumper - it is more of a Southwest look. As a personal preference I don't put finish on the butt. The reason - before my evolution as a cuemaker I was a poolplayer (will be to the day I die). Played since I was 12 - that is almost 50 years. And in all those years, I know what happens to butts of cues when they are played with. (And I build my cues to be played with). Butts get hit (sometimes slammed) on the ground, on tables, on other cues, and into everything. And when the finish on the butt gets scratched and dinged it costs to get refinished. And you always feel bad - atleast I did. I don't want to make money refinishing cues, don't want players with my cues feeling bad and having to get cues refinished - just want them to keep playing! I use a Delrin butt cap not the other materials being used for butt caps - it is strong and takes a lot of abuse and still looks good. Hope that answers your concern.

Apples to Apples-Comparing Cuebuilders

Gentlemen

(I am supposed to be working at home on the computer this week instead of logging onto AZBilliards!)

Comparing cues and cuebuilders is impossible. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...."

Comparing a Sierra to a Madden or a Whisler isn't apples to apples. Comparing a BCM to a Sierra - same story.

We all have our favorites for many reasons. If you are going to the Sands 9 Ball thing next week in Reno - check out the many, many different looks, styles, joints, shaft thicknesses etc etc etc that the top pros use-and they can use ANY CUE THEY WANT TO USE.

My father (who knew and played pool with Jack Madden 30 or so years ago when the Golden Cue was on 19th & Camelback) still likes his Ginacue with a stainless steel joint and stiff as a board shaft while most of us these days are opting for wood to wood joints with much more inlays and with a much fancier look to it.

If you like the way it looks and hits and the look fits your personality....$200 or $2000 - it'll work just as good.

My father told me that Jack actually builds cues better than he played pool !!
Just kidding! :D

Since you own a Jack Madden cue send me your email address via a pm. I will send you some pictures of the new stuff I am doing - spliced points, petite inlay - it will be a month or so before the webpage is updated. A very different look than the web page. And I think I need to play with your Dad when I visit Phoenix!!

Whisler Cues

I have a Whisler that has a very strong hit. I love the way it plays but the finish on it is sub par and I don't like the taper on the shafts that came with it. His points are usually immaculate.

On the subject of Sierra Cues, a dealer told me that Whisler uses their facilities to do some of his more intricate inlay work.

I have posted some pics of my Whisler if some readers are unfamiliar with his work.

Cues

Andy-All work, and I mean all work, is done in by Scott Whisler in his shop !
That I know to be 100% factual.

I can tell you that the BCM guy is reputed to do a lot of his work at the Sierra Cue shop.

The cue you have pictures of is a great looking cue and I bet it hits great. I notice that it was signed 3/2002. Perhaps back then Whisler was using a different finish coat. Believe me when I say that everything I have seen from him the past two years is finished off immaculately.

Did your Whisler come with an ABPD.... Automatic Ball Pocketing Device ?

I bet that helps when you're playhing one pocket - huh? :p

Expect An Email...

From my Dad.

He just moved from Salt Lake back to Phoenix after not having lived there for a long time. He said he knew you had moved to Montana and wondered what you were thinking when you did that ;)

My 2 Cents

Hey guys , just to throw my two cents in this thread. I have ( 7 ) Madden cues that I have collected over this past year. I also have ( 3 ) Sierra cues. I love both of them. More towards the Madden cues. Since he is a family friend. My uncle has also been collecting Madden cues and is in the process of getting one built right now.............VERY SHARP LOOKING..............Also to let you all know. My father and uncle were at the Golden Eight Ball at 35th and IndianSchool Rd. Back in the 70's, when a road player came into town named Mike Sigel a.k.a (Captin Hook) and played John "Jack" Madden. From what I've been told it was a very good game.

Tracy,
RE: Delrin butts - no sealer - I just polish them.

Scott,RE: your Dad - I am looking forward to hearing from him.

D-Sureshot, thank you for trip back to the 70's - good memory and it was a very good game, even though I am "shy a few bucks" - and for those who never saw him in action as a road player -Sigel was a gentleman, good guy, great road player.

Scottthesnot [jack builds better cue than he plays] maybe so maybe so but I would still like to play your Dad ---

T, SS, StS, thank you - you have given me some nice thoughts/memories to think about while cutt'n wood today -

I misunderstood breakandrun, when he said you don't finish your butts, I thought he meant the entire length of the butt :)

Who cares where he does his work? What does that have to do with anything? Can you tell us for a fact if he paid cash for all his materials or if he may have put some on a credit card?? Maybe I missed something.

I hate to take sides Larry but someone insinuating Bryan doesn't do all of his work or there is anything wrong with him working at his friend's shop isn't too nice either.
