who is the best in TX?

Does Hager Jr still live in Texas.

David G plays great but I think Charlie and JJ are much more consistent
year round.
When David is playing he has a real high level. Good one pocket player
as well.

One story I always heard was that Scotty Townsend went to a bar in Houston and got beat by at least 10 players...all were Mexican or hispanic.

I kow Franco Sabestian used to be in Texas as well. I have neot heard anything about him at all.

Not too many know who Tommy Sanders is but the guy could really play when he was playing. Probably not he best in TX but capable of
beating the top players.

You've got to make that Keith's poster pic .... lmao ....

He probably could get a lot of money games in that outfit .... Rofl

Man, what a loaded question. So many different games, so many different names. I'll throw a few proven ones into the hat.
Bob Vanover
Dick Lane
Paul Guernsey
Chen
Lil David
Bastrop
Rene Rendon
Javier Franco
Erman Bullard
Coy Lee
Gabby

And that's just for starters......randyg

He is from Beaumont,TX

I am from where tommy lives.I agree if tommy was playing he would be one of the best in the world. He has beat earl and most of the rest.I have seen him be losing 8-2 race to 9 to hager and played the best set i have ever seen and came back and won.He has beat r.pierce, buddy hall, etc.Has the best stroke I have ever seen.We have some good players in my area,no world beaters but tommy will all of the sudden get out on a sunday.Once a year and beat everyone out of every tourny.

Slipped by me, Coy Lee Nicholson, very strong player, and I knew him
before the tattoos and piercings ... lol My first tournament in which
Coy Lee played was here in Wichita, which Coy Lee won, and he was
hitting on all cylinders, the final match he broke and ran 88% percent
of the set. Real strong break. He and Julie Mason (a friend and player) were
RV'g from tournament to tournament back then.

Dick Lane ... Haven't seen him for years, probably one of the most
logic oriented players I have ever seen.

No ,they broke even. They played some on Bar Box and then switched to 9 footer.I do not remember exactly .One beat other on BarBox but lost on the 9footer.This was 10 or more years ago.

Hum well was told differently as i wasnt there. And as far as ten plus years ago that when he was really playing.i saw him 4 years ago when he played hager and just went to a tourny and was talked in to playing and still beat some top notch players.

i heard just stealing purse and forcing women to take their rings off.I heard he was a true world beater.

The body fashion happened after he broke up with Julie, and got a
new girlfriend several years his junior as I understand it.
I saw him at a tournament after that, and yes he had some
tats and piercings which he did not before.

Do you remember Franco Sebastion (sp?). Might have been Sebastian Franco.
If so have your heard anything about his whereabouts.
He won me a decent wad once without even knowing each other.
I showed up in Panama City with a couple buddies late one night before a tournament. Hot Shots did not close so we hung out there until the morning to get a room. A guy comes in with a small suitcase and sits nearby.
We were just sitting around drinking and the guy asks to bum a drink telling us he had just come off the greyhound from Texas. His appearance was not too swift and I was not sure about befriending the guy but all he wanted was
a beer. He sits down and starts in about how he is a good player and is down on his luck a little. He had sold his cue and was trying to get somewhere by playing some events. My two buddies had a table and asked
him to shoot alittle I thik too call his bluff.
He stepped up and surprised us by playing pretty good. He then asked us to put him in the event and told us his name. We did not know his name and
he said he did not think many people knew him except Scotty and Javier.
We figure it was worth a shot and the entry was only $50.
A not so funny part was that they had a calcutta and the place was packed.
They started bidding on Franco and it was at about 100 when I started.
It ended up with me and another fellow at $175 and I was about to get him.
I stepped backwards a little to lean on a table thinking we were about done and I would go pay when I hear another bidder. I jumped forward but could not see the bidder. He upped me and I ended up getting Franco for
$200 or $225. When I started going to the front i saw one of my buddies and
he told me that HE had been outbid and did not know how much to bid for Franco. I asked him when he stopped bidding and he says it was him and another guy at the end. I reached out to shake his hand and told him "hello
I am that other guy". We started laughing.
Franco played great and won the tournament. For some reason I remember there being two events that time but I dont know why there would ahve been. One bar box and one big table. No matter he got the cheese and was great about the splits. He even took some out for the drinks and food we had bought him. He did not speak great english but he really could play.
We were very young and pool inexperienced and he was fair with us which is
unusual in pool circle.
My buddy had a Joss West and I had a Schon yet he chose to play with
my buddies Meucci Sneaky Pete. Afterwards we took him to the bus depot and he was off to another pool tournament and some relatives.
One odd thing was that I assumed that he had no money and was busted.
We gave him the drink and other food/drinks over the day and a half yet when we were cutting up the money he had some money on him. He would say that it was his money he was raising for his trip. Not sure what that was but he was decent to us and showed us some pool. We went back home having a good fun weekend. I always wondered what happened to him and
how Dean Moore did not know him.

Ho do u know Coy? Have u been around pool for many years? Just curious..
Coy used to play in a weekly tournament that I ran @ Rusty's Billiards in Arlington, TX. It was every Sat night and it drew the players from the area and anyone coming through on the road. A very young JJ stopped in one night to play, as did Danny Harriman many yrs before he turned pro. Coy, Erman, fat Ralph, "lizard" lots of good players used to play in that tourney... It was a lot of fun. I've been around pool for roughly 16 yrs. I'm getting old!

Great story Frank. Good point about Dean because he usually had the heads-up on everybody. That is a testament to the knowledge you have always had about peoples speed.

Trust me.... their are ALOT of players out here that people do not know about! That is why road players tend to stay clear of Texas, especially Houston. All of the money seems to stay IN state most of the time!

Unlike you, our resident gypsy, i'm not hard to find. ;) I'm usually pretty vocal about tournaments and pool related things that I attend so that I can meet fellow AZBer's if they're going to be there.

I've heard players state that they won't go to TX. The state is so big and there's so many high calibur unknown players. I had no concept of the magnitude of players until I moved out there & started running that weekly tournament. I ran one in SC before I moved to TX and there's simply no comparison. Both were handicap tournaments and believe me, I really had my work cut out for me in TX!
