Why and how long have to taken a break from pool?

Been playing about 25 years, took a 6 year break from 2001 - 2007 due to traveling for work. Wasn't at home, so no leagues, no reason to practice, and no table at home to keep up the stroke. Then played for 2 years and took another 1 year break, just got tired of my progress, couldn't quite get back to my former speed consistently at least.

Started up again last year, within a few months was on the cusp of feeling good again, then I took a lesson, started messing with things, and caused myself a 4 - 5 month slump. Took a month off, started fresh this year, and playing better than I ever have, and consistently too, have only had one off night since January. Amazing how the little things get in the way, and once you realize what you were doing you just want to smack yourself in the head for wasting so much time... One of these days I'll find someone to work with, getting an outside perspective would have helped for sure.

I've taken two, five years breaks.

The first one came in the best years I might have had playing. I was around 20 years old.

I was playing on the north shore of the Boston area. Rooms were closing right and left. All of the players were in Vietnam or had come back and didn't come back to the pool rooms around my area. It became increasingly difficult to find a game.

There was a room with a billiard table and plenty of billiard players to play there. I spent more than five years playing three cushion billiards. Not my choice but at least I was around the game.

My next break came at age 50. My children were at an age I felt it was more important for me to be around them than playing pool. It turned out to be a wise choice. I firmly believe that.

I think its been a little under 2 years for me.

I stopped to pursue hobbies that are less competitive.

I stopped about 3 yrs. ago. Finally decided that no matter what I tried, my cuetip is always going to strike slightly right of center. That few millimeters is a killer. If I could strike center ball 90 % of the time, I could play B+ to B++.
