Why are some players using cue extensions for shots they don’t need to reach?

I’m noticing that some top players will put on a cue extension for a shot that they don’t need it for. For example Orcullo screws one on to his cue when he shots the 9ball halfway through this video:
I'm not tall and use a 3" extension all the time so I can comfortably reach the cue ball past the middle of the table. Bridge length is about 12 inches. Total cue weight is 19.25 ounces. I like the balance with the extension.

What they said.
Watch at 3:55. When Dennis walks to this end of the table and looks at the shot. When he turns to go back to the other end, he removes the extension and sets it on the table to the right.

dennis did take it off- good catch, good sam.

otherwise, not sure how shooting off the rail would be benefitted by added length/weight in the back ?
especially using an open bridge..if anything, adding weight in front of the balance point seems appropriate

Do you mean when you need to reach too far? If not that, why?

If the object ball is 2 feet from the pocket and cue ball is 2 feet from the object ball the margin or error is relatively large for a force follow shot. Now the same shot but 4' X 4', with a smaller margin of error, it would need more force follow due to the longer distance. My experience is that the heavier weight would give more force follow without without having to power the shot. As for the length of the extension, I feel it adds some stability.
As an example: A 9 ball break shot is not as accurate as a normal stop shot. Just my experience...how about yours?

Thanks, Joe; I get you now.

I've never used an extension. Pretty tall (6' 3") and also like to keep things simple (in keeping with my mind :)).

I was amazed the first time I tried one. Borrow one and give it a try, it doesn't have much to do with how tall you are. Remember what Cicero said!!!!

I use one occasionally, and I screw it in on the way from 20+ foot away. Only reason I do is I hate waiting on people walking back n forth questioning what to do, like jump sticks etc so I walk up prepared if I think it's close. If I gotta jump or need more wood I bring it ready, if no jump needed I'll lean it somewhere and as far as extension the Xtra 1/2 oz doesn't matter shooting to me
