Why do players seem to want the same cue, tip, and specs that their favorite player uses?

one small observation regarding options:
maybe a year ago, the SVB branded cynergy cue cost ~$600 while the purewood somethingrather was ~$999. That's the same shaft on both cues. I thought about going that route just for the savings.

May be the same reason why people shoot with the same brand of clubs a certain golf pro uses. People may even invest enough money into the exact putter, or set of irons, or driver as a pro they watch.

It just seems really silly to me, that so many players, or wanna be players, are so interested in what their favorite Pro player uses, and seem to want to have whatever their favorite player is using, maybe right down to the same specs that that their player likes, and many cases.

All players are different, and prefer different things. Different lengths, tapers, tips, weight balances, weights, and feels of a cue, like Leather, Linen, or wrapless, so why not go out there and try out different cues, to get a feel for what you personally like the best, instead of worrying about what ever your favorite player is using?

For example, my favorite player is Josh Filler, but he uses a 16oz cue, lol. I could never be comfortable playing with a 16oz cue. And, he plays for Predator, and always had. I am personally not too crazy about Predator, but that is just me. Still love Josh Filler though, but I could care less what he is using, or the exact specs that he uses for his cue.

I have an old friend who seems to Worship SVB, and he wants to get a cue that is exactly like Shane's cue. That just seems silly to me. I have heard nothing but great reviews about the Cuetec Cynergy though, and would love to try one out. I also really love the look of their 2nd generation of cues, with the really nice inlaid(?) design. None of that has anything to do with the fact that SVB is a 5 time US Open 9 ball Champion though, and maybe arguably the greatest player ever. I just love trying out new cues.

Thanks for any thoughts.
why does it matter to you what someone else wants to use?

the first gen svb is still 605 new on amazon
1 shaft size option

truewood gen 2 is 1000-1100 depending where you buy
omega gives you choice of shaft size of all 3 they offer

The butt diameter is a little different on the SVB. If that is a big deal to you it could make a difference. I think the little bigger diameter is fine etc… but you might want to compare the feel.

Snooker, carom and pool cues all have about the same weight range. 18-19oz on avreage or 500g in metric.
Yeah, but I think some of the series game guys go a little lighter in the carom cues than the 3C guys. I would say standard pool cue 58” 19 oz, tip 13mm with more people going smaller tip now. 3C 56” 18oz or whatever is close in grams and 12mm.

I'm always interested in what people play with, especially players that use strange setups (ex. Filler's featherweight).
That said it's pretty purely out of curiosity - at least until you see something that's not on the market.

The butt on the SVB (Gen1 at least) is THICK. Feels very strange going to that from my Predators that are significantly slimmer.

Yup! Definitely shorter cues and as you say generally smaller tip diameter, but very much the same weight range. The same goes for snooker cues, but again different configuration and a snooker cue have a very different balance compared to a pool cue.

Interesting, Filler and I shoot with the same weight cue down to a few grams. I call mine 16.5 ounces but don't really remember the exact tenth of an ounce. I use a sixty inch cue to keep half a century old bad habits at bay. The butt is thinner than I would like, maybe I'll add a slick wrap. Think I'll ask the cue builders.

There are times I want to get a McDermott because some guy I know can do fun stuff with the cueball :D

What’s wrong with using a known good player as a reference point for equipment? Say I don’t like how my tip plays but I’ve never played with a different tip. How am I choosing my next tip? I don’t think people think if they use SVBs cue they’ll play like SVB, but there’s some assurance the equipment won’t be holding them back at all

Because they don’t understand the game.. I don’t care what anyone uses. We are all different. You have to find what feels good to you so you have confidence and play well. They have this thought process that if svb uses it they should and thats very flawed thinking imo.
It’s as I’ve said 1000 times with carbon fiber vs wood. Neither is better. If you think carbon fiber plays better then wood your not wrong .. if you think wood plays better then carbon fiber your also not wrong. Lol
