Why do pool players need so much time?

To Ronnie....the most pressure tournaments are the equivalent of playing in my basement, on my very best day.
Still..even that doesn't explain it.

It's just beautiful.

thats why he is successful and gets lots of sponsors as people want to watch him.

instead of a slow poke boring player like we have here in the u.s.

well that's one part of the equation. his opponent here, thepchaya, is the fastest player on the tour, in average shot time. massive talent, but he doesn't win any tournaments and are rarely in finals. if he was winning more he would be more on the main TV table, which is what sponsors want. the last world champion kyren wilson is kind of slow and boring, and he didn't get as much TV time as he wanted.

so you have to be both fast paced and successful to be attractive to sponsors. like ronnie, judd trump, zhao. and i think that's good

he's a one off, but look at luca brecel when he's in the zone, or zhao, trump, etc. no, pool players (and slow snooker players) don't need to take so much time, they do it because they can
This i agree with you, there are only a couple players i like watching. It isn't just about the game, but the way they do it. Ronnie is one the other is jack lisowski is the other
No one comes close to those two. If you watch the last final between O'Sullivan and Robertson.
Robertson was so slow, 2 minutes a shot, on some of those visits.

The slowness in Pool is a culture thing, they do it because they can. Everybody plays the same now, so there is, no style, players of the 90s and early 2000s are long gone.
Even with a shot clock, its tough watch. Maybe its just me, im stuck in the past lol😄

Its difficult to compare snooker to pool as far as time required. The black ball and all other colored balls (except red) are always in the same place. The majority of the time red balls are all in the same area so you don't have to move the cue ball much. There's a lot of the same shots over and over again, same as position shots.

This is true and you might add that 147s are typically played on the 6 x 6 end of the table where the reds are.

But that still doesn't justify airstroking , getting down , getting back up , airstroking , getting back down , getting up , and walking around the table only to come back and retreat the same waste of time again.

Televised snooker often has time restrictions and slow play is not tolerated.

Bingo.

Self doubt is probably the biggest reason. Although I know quick players that ratchet it down in stakes matches where they’re acutely aware their pace is taking their opponent out of their game.

all those things are totally cultural. monkey see, monkey do. the walking laps around the table is obviously unnecessary as proven by the top players who don't do it.

yes, layouts are more varied in pool, but... these guys have seen all those shots before, thousands of times. in practice and competition. they're no weekend warriors

Robertson is not that slow…..Ronnie was 13 seconds on a lot of shots…Robertson was 14 seconds. But just a few times Robertson was in a complicated situation and took his time…one of them had reds all over the table and he took longer to shoot than Ronnie’s magic 147….but I still don’t like the idea of a shot clock…..some situations require more time.
Matchroom, a while back, put up a Wall of Shame, for slow players….that alleviated the situation greatly. I like it much better than a clock….it leaves leeway for those times when you gotta be a rocket scientist plus a Rocket.
