Why do we play pool

Why did you start playing pool?
When I was about 10 or 11, I saw some guys playing at the bar where my father hung out and I was immediately entranced by the game.

Why do you play pool now? Do the reasons differ?
I am still enthralled by the game, and I thrive on the competitive aspect of the game when I can get it, but I also love to get on the table and practice! It is still about my quest to improve and move up in the ranks.

What were your goals for the past year?
I just started playing agan late last year after a few years' hiatus from the game, and my goal was just to get back in stroke at least to the point where I could compete with players from out of town.

What are your goals for next year?
I hope to travel to more events and to match up with better players in order to improve my game. I certainly hope to go to Vegas next year and place well. Most of all, however, I will not be totally at peace unless I run 100 balls or more by the end of 2008!

theres not a 'why' for me anymore and when I started playing it more of 'why not?'. Goals ; has to be the phillipines
I just played the last year without any 'goals', probably to play every day was my goal. I wasn't worried about improving, just playing for fun and being creative with shot-making. Probably to play faster and not to look like a serious pool player but to look like a social player who gets lucky. Fluid and stream lined motion.

I'm in it because I want the money, the women, the fortune and fame... if it means I end up burning in hell, scorching in flames..

its a good excuse for going out and meeting women. This way mother nature won't have to be worried about all the hotties at the bar. Because I am just there to play pool.

That and its the only sport I was able to identify a filipino in.

After reflecting on my own journey in pool recently and reestablishing goals for my future, I thought I would ask here about this.

Why did you start playing pool?

When I was a child , my Parents were musicians and traveled the country from bar to bar and show to show. I literally grow up in bars and started playing as soon as I was tall enought to see the balls. There were more than a few times that I was forced to buy the gas after the band drank it all away so we could get us to the next gig. :)

I do not set goals for myself because of the undeniable fact that I will NOT meet them, and even if I did, it would not give me any satisfaction.
I do almost everything thing in life simply for the "fun factor". If any endeavor I take up cannot put a smile on my face, then I ain't gonna be doing it very much longer.

Boy Howdy on this one...at my age, 63, if it isn't fun, I don't do it...life's too short. So, that's why I play pool...strictly for the fun, the pleasure of those rare times when I feel I'm shooting well by my own admittedly low standards.

Why did you start playing pool?
I started because they had a table at the YMCA when I was 12 and waiting to get in the swimming pool.

Why do you play pool now? Do the reasons differ?
The relaxed concentration takes my mind off of everything else. I like the challenge to run more balls, and I have always liked competing with myself (improving my score against my last high run). Same things as when I was 12.

What were your goals for the past year?
Get my table back together, build the room and bar. Beat a friend of mine (B+ player) who has a big ego. Sometimes I beat him, sometimes not. So I made the goal but need to beat him consistently now.

What are your goals for next year?
Win another tournament (last was ten years ago) where B to B+ players are the competition this time.
Run 50+ balls in 14.1.

Why did you start playing pool? After TCOM, I was hooked. I don't feel the same way now.
Why do you play pool now? Do the reasons differ? Money. I'm not a full-time player, but the only reason I play is to stay sharp for my next session. I don't play league, anymore. I play tournaments sometimes, though, not the weekly variety.
What were your goals for the past year? To win money matches I play.

What are your goals for next year? Ditto
