why do you prefer the game you do?

It's hard to explain why I like 9 ball. It's a barbarian's game. Like another poster said, you HAVE to come up with something in the likely event of a very wacky layout. 9 ball FORCES you to perform. Yet, sometimes you're always in line and it looks very simple.
I like 8 ball because of the strategy and because it's by far my best game. However, it's finite and concrete as opposed to straight or 1P. I love the fact that you're playing the two groups at all times. Making life difficult for your opponent and easier for yourself. Very SINGULAR game.
Straight pool and One Pocket are very abstract and fascinating for that very reason. Straight puts you in a rhythm, one pocket gets you out of it. But in both games there are no easy signals of what shot to shoot or what pattern to play. It has to be MADE UP.

I suggested the million dollar challenge for Efren in the "What's Left For Efren" thread a week or two ago. Someone said that modern players wouldn't consider breaking that record on easy equipment a big deal (Mosconi ran his 526 on a 8 footer with big pockets).
I think its amazing that someone can just break the balls over 35 times and not have some fluke bad luck. To even have a shot after that many breaks is impressive, much less running all the balls and getting a good break shot. Straight pool is definately the hardest game for me, mentally.
I like all the games but when playing others I like games like three cushion or banks where I shoot a lot and don't have to wait too long between innings. One pocket is also a great game but some of the people I play with knock everything uptable almost every game (even if they're not up a couple of balls) and that gets old when you don't have too much time to play.

For recreation or making some quick money, I like 8 or 9 ball.
I played a lot of 14.1 when I was a kid, but the tables were
available. Only 1 large Pool room has enough full sized tables (9)
to play 14.1 or 1 pocket on, and then finding someone that
plays them is even harder. There are some 1 hole players here,
but the availibility of them is limited for playing times.
Quite frankly, I don't play for free, and when I occasionly
practice, it is for an upcoming tournament or a set upcoming
money match. 8 and 9 ball is pretty fast and loose playing,
14.1 and 1 hole more indepth playing and concentration.
I haven't played a full sized table in 4 years, mainly because
I hate using a bridge so much (5'7" tall), and bar table is just
more 'my size'. I do occasionly frequent 1 small room here
sometimes to play some 'golf' on a snooker table, and enjoy
it.

I Played 9ball for years, and loved every minute of it. Then when I got to a pretty good speed I started to get disgusted by the luck factor when giving out weight. When it's played at a top flite runout level, it's a beautiful thing.
14.1 = Control... It was next when my mentor made me start playing it or he would'nt teach me anymore. I hated it so much coming from 9ball, I felt constricted. I played it for 5 years til I learned to run alot of balls, and in turn love the game to this day. It's like an onion, each layer is a lesson, and the more you peel off and learn, the more you realize you need to learn.
1Pocket = Creativity....When I first started playing this game, I was amazed at how someone could move ALL the balls to thier hole in about 3 shots!!
After learning the basic moves in the game, all my knowledge from the other games plus my own creativity mixed in made for a REALLY fun and rewarding experience. I'm not really a great 1 pocket player yet, but it has by far been the most fun game to learn.
Not to forget Billiards....I've only played 3 cusion maybe a dozen times, but I could easily see myself getting lost in that game for about a decade

One Pocket...forces me to think, forces me to push my limits and its more than a game to me...much more 
Bar-Box 8/9-Ball...cause I'm not a great shotmaker but my cue ball has to be tighter due to the smaller playing surface
3 Cushion...defying geometry and pyshics appeals to me a great deal

As long as I've played straight pool the rule has been any shot is legal including the modern day push is as long as you stroke through with one motion. The only time changing cues is accepted is on masse or the break shot as to not damage your shooting equipment. Besides who doesn't wan't to see their opponent jump or masse while shooting 14.1 usually a good sign to bet lunch.
