Why make the game easy?

In my opinion, the pockets should be as tight as allowable by the rules...Remember years ago when the old schoolers played on those big tables with little pockets and clay balls that were all chipped and stuff. These guys ran 100's of balls. Mosconi, Caras, Greenleaf, Ponzi, Lassiter, and the list goes on and on.

I'd like to see a US Open tournament (straight pool) played on nothing but 5 X 10 tables with the small pockets like they had back then and see who the real champion is.

Back then is when you earned your keep on these unforgiving tables. Now a days it's made too easy and something in the pro circuit should be standardizied with the pockets to make it an even playing field. Any player of C status can play like an A or a good B on a table with big pockets.

No offense to anyone out there, but when was the last time or was there a last time when one of our newer super stars ran over 100 on a tight pocket table or namely a 5 X 10.

Just my two cents worth.

Forget about a 5 x 10. Many of today's players have never even seen one.

However, on very tight 4 1/2 x 9 equipment, I've seen Mika Immonen run over 100 numerous times. If we're talking cometiiton, though, to my knowledge, the last straight pool event played on supertight equipment in the US was the 1993 US Open 14.1 championships. In that event, Tony Robles ran a 107 and out against John Ervolino.

the pockets are plenty tight in taiwan........they showed two balls in the pockets........you could probably fit 1.5 balls in the pocket, and the shelf is cut deep like a diamond.

i've never seen so many missed shots.........these pockets are kicking everyone's ass..........this is the way its supposed to be.

VAP

I think the pockets at the WPC are tight, but not TOO tight. They still accept balls if you hit it good. And for some reason I haven't seen any balls hang up and just stay in the hole. They either pop out and go somewhere else or rattle and fall. I wonder why that is?

Maybe they should... ;)

Isn't snooker usually played on a big table...

This is why I think the caliber of players today will never equal the caliber of players back then. I'm not taking anything away at all. The players today are absolutely the best out there. But I think the players of yesteryear had more tougher competition and playing conditions than what we see today and at times we take for granted.

Varner vs. Mosconi on a 5 X10.

Tight pockets, deep shelf, pro players? OK that's good. I hope they don't start adjusting the pockets in the pool halls though. I surely won't enjoy it as much specially since I don't have much spare time. Don't wanna go home more stressed out! LOL. ;)
