Why this call?

It's not that bad, why should a player be punished because his opponent missed a shot? It's almost on the level of the bar rules where they just shoot the ball into a pocket and make the guy kick at a ball in the kitchen, except one is by accident the other on purpose.

I am not a fan of the rule either for amateur play, but for pro players, it's not too bad. My favorite way to play 10 ball is just called shot, and you can give the shot back if the player pockets a ball not called or pockets a ball while calling a safe, but not after just a miss.
For me, the artistry of playing percentages and taking freebies at low percentage outcomes with a safe leave as consolation is very appealing and why I prefer pure texas express 9ball rules. I don't even play real 10ball. If gambling, I tell the opponent I don't mind an extra ball on the table, but 9ball rules or find another playing partner. I can appreciate guys wanting to take luck out and preferring call shot, call safe. But I love the luck factor. Makes it more fun and more interesting for me.

Being hill hill and watching the 9 ball rattle out of the pocket and roll into the opposite corner is pure awesomeness.

Depending on what side of the shot you're on.
LOL. I love it. First pro I ever beat, I was up 1 on the hill with an easy 9 for the win. I dogged it so bad into the corner it came back out off 2 rails, caromed off the CB and went into the other corner for the win. Gotta love 9ball. 20 years later, that crazy fluke still makes me smile.
